Talk:Psion, Discipline Variant (5e Class)

Any questions or concerns? I would love any kind of feedback.

Errors[edit]

Something I saw while using this to make a char. is the Cantrips know say zero all the way to 3rd level(?), but the cantrips under the table say at first level you know 1 cantrip of your choice. I believe this is something that was over looked but I'm not sure.

Problems[edit]

I think someone needs to re-read through this. There are things that contradict other things and make no sense. Other then this one problem it was an amazing class. Wish it was done a little better tho.

I agree, one I noticed is that Mental Manifester removes the need for verbal components, however, Psions already do not require verbal components for their spells. This ability currently only benefits Psions multiclassing with another spellcaster class. I do have an idea for an alternative. How about allowing telepaths to be able to sense creatures with a 30 ft range and be able to target them with their Psion spell without actually being able to see the creatures? Questions[edit]

Concerns[edit]

One of the benefits of a Psion in previous editions was the fact that you do not need verbal, somatic or material components for your magic. Why has this been excluded? If you intended for Psions to manifest psionic powers without the need of arcane gestures or whispered chanting, shouldn't you say, in the Spellcasting-->Manifestations section. "Psions may cast any psion spell they know without the need of any somatic or verbal components."

Which edition? I based this off 3.5 and it required materials, please so some evidence. --Tubal-Cain (talk) 16:22, 7 August 2015 (MDT)
I based everything off of d&d3.5. As for evidence, I'll reference the Wizards of the Coast official site. All About Psionics (Part Two)[1]
Differences Between Spells and Psionic Powers
A psionic power is not a spell, even though it works much like a spell. Important differences
between powers and spells include the following:
A psionic power has no verbal, somatic, material, or focus components.
Using a psionic power is a purely mental action, albeit one that requires enough concentration
 to provoke attacks of opportunity.

It is also possible to compare the Expanded Psionics Handbook (ch4) to the Players Handbook (ch10).

Suggestions[edit]

for the Psychokinesis, I suggest the following:

Ability 5: Kinetic Reformation

gained 5th or 6th level

If a spell or cantrip you cast would cause fire, cold, lightning, or thunder damage you may choose, when casting the spell to deal damage of one of the other 3 types instead. --Entropicscholar (talk)

The kineticist deals primarily with heat, so only fire and cold, lightning and thunder are general psion abilities so changing this base ability would alter it to a point where it is no longer Kinetic.[2] --Tubal-Cain (talk) 16:25, 7 August 2015 (MDT)
My thought here was that, in d&d3.5 most Psychokinesis powers contained a clause similar to "Upon manifesting this power, you choose cold, electricity, fire, or sonic." and at the end of the power description, listed the differences based on the energy type chosen. There is, of course, a Pyrokineticist (prestige class). --Entropicscholar (talk) 01:06, 8 August 2015 (MDT)

FAQ[edit]

  • Ritual Casting: The Psion is not supposed to know rituals, exclusion of this common feature was not a mistake.
