Talk:Pot Fiend (5e Race)

Issues I see so far:

  • some spelling errors (hipernation, grappleing, etc.)
  • scores, skills, and conditions need linking
  • half-fiend type doesn't exist in 5e. Do you mean fiend and humanoid dual type?
  • Snatch is weird. It makes a grapple build much more powerful for the subrace, since you can impose restrained very easily. You might want to specify you can only do this to one creature at a time, like a monster's swallow. The balance on it is iffy
  • Tridextrous is easily abusable, allowing you to use a two-handed weapon along with a shield. Should have the either-or wording (see marilith)
  • The tiny pot allows you to gain +2 to AC ON TOP of your already high 17 base.
  • How they cannot swim should be written out, I think. Like, do they just automatically sink

Basically, this race is like a stronger tortle with weirder flavor and I'm not sure it all goes well in the realm of mechanics. I half-expected something less wonky, maybe, like a jack-in-the-box jump-scare tactic instead of grabbing something into a pot with you. Still unfinished, though, so there is room for improvement. Happy brewing.--Yanied (talk) 19:58, 23 December 2021 (MST)

fixed most issues except linking. I agree that snatch might be hard to balance, but considering that you'd have to use 2 turns in order to (maybe) restrain (with drawbacks) a single enemy seems fine imo. Needs playtesting. --Quel (talk) 20:24, 23 December 2021 (MST)

Some mechanics thoughts:

  • Literal Pot's AC bonus might benefit from scaling, perhaps adding your proficiency bonus as your "bones" mature and grow stronger.
  • I feel like Pot Armor's AC should depend on subrace; 17 for big bois, 15 + dex (max 2) for medium, and 13 + dex for that which we used to hold paw-paw's ashes in.
  • I rewrote Adaptable Body according to my interpretation of its intent, but I'm still unsure how to interpret it in-world. Is it better at climbing because its limbs are sticky? It's also probably too strong as is. Is it necessary that your hands remain free or could that be trimmed for balance? If not, it should probably only grant advantage on climbing checks.
  • Snatch being a guaranteed success is very strong, it should require a second grapple check.
  • The base speed should be no lower than 25, maybe with the exception of the big boi. Even the tortle gets 30'.
  • Superior darkvision is a bit bland for the little guy. Should be something to reflect being "nimble" as well as fast, like a limited use evasion move or bonus action disengage.

As for weight, I found a round 3' tall by 3' wide urn online made of "Glass Fiber Reinforced Concrete" weighing in at 160lbs, which should roughly scale to 180-220lbs for an "average" 3.5'-4.5' tall pot that is as wide as is tall. Medieval materials would likely be less dense, especially bone, but there are many other factors like width of the pot, thickness of the walls, and weight of the creature's "flesh" (?) inside. Hope that helps. --Malachai (talk) 04:59, 24 December 2021 (MST)
