Talk:Point Buy, But Better! (5e Variant Rule)

So someone decided rather rudely earlier to delete the page after insulting its creation. Whoever did that clearly doesn't get the idea of just ignoring a thing if you don't like it. --Supersmily5 (talk) 11:35, 3 July 2020 (MDT)

I agree, but with revisions.[edit]

Decided to look up exactly this, and wasn't disappointed. However, I have a few suggestions that might spice things up a bit, and make the Points Buy System a bit more balanced and moderated, whilst also adding those "crisp numbers" you're looking for, without breaking the balance of the system.

  1. Set the following Ability Score parameters with the Points Buy System: 1 minimum, 8 base, and 18 maximum; but keep the total base number of Ability Score Points at 27. This is because the recommended ASI for most non-human races is +3, and thus the grand total in your Ability Score Bonus averages, ironically, a crisp 30.
  2. Make a third tier of the Points Buy System, where it costs 3 ability score points to raise an ability score by 1, to 16, 17, or 18. Obviously, this is so that the highest an ability score can go, with an Ability Score Increase feature, is Nat20, so to speak.
  3. Make it possible to lower an Ability Score below 8, down to 1, and then have those subtractions be redeemable as additional ability score points; +1 ability score point, per ability score subtracted by 1 to lower than 8, and +2 ability score points, for an ability score that is subtracted by 1 down to 1 or 2. Naturally, depending upon which system of ability score points you are using, 1 or 2 is the minimum an ability score can go down to, without being considered "broken", as it incurs an ability score modifier penalty limit of -5.

The following table details this suggestion further (permission to use this table is hereby granted, by the way!):
