Balance?[edit]

Just gotta say, fun looking race, when my DM asked me about how exactly penguins would fit into forgotten realms, I just said spellplague, problem solved, however, one aspect is still holding me back, the daily power seems a bit over powered, its essentially a shift plus a free action point --Chimmy 15:39, 1 March 2012 (MST)

Yes, this is broken in various ways. I've made the following changes:
  • Dropped the Dexterity bonus (format should be +2 to one, +2 to one or another)
  • Languages: They didn't have Common, and shouldn't have Abyssal. They're penguins, so I changed this to just Common.
  • Changed the feather density bonus from "+3" to "+2 racial"
  • Dropped Natural Charm: They already have an (optional) bonus to charisma and bonuses to two of the three interaction skills. That already covers most "non-combat" charisma-based checks.
  • Bird Bounce had been "fixed" by changing it to a daily, but racial powers ought to be encounter - and it's the free standard action on a "free action" power that's the problem (no matter what the frequency is). I've changed this to a "jump 2 squares" on a minor action and that's it. The penguin can move (move action), jump (minor action) and then attack (standard action). That puts it on par with other racial mobility powers.
Warrior Heritage is unpleasant - the standard given by elf and dwarf is for one martial ranged and one martial melee proficiency, and no more. And in both those cases, they represent part of the races culture and have the feats and fluff to back this up. There's nothing here to explain why every single penguin is trained in three types of blade. Marasmusine 01:18, 2 March 2012 (MST)

Hi, I've been playing as a Penguin class for ages (Keith Chezney is my character). I had a back story already created for the race so I decided to just update this page with my story (Penguins go to war with Gods, lose and fall) Hope people like it :) [DrCrippler - 17/09/2015 21:38]

If you mean this, I've reverted it as it didn't make any sense. Marasmusine (talk) 03:52, 10 November 2015 (MST)
So from a mechanical balance standpoint the encounter and one trait are good as they are but the race is otherwise lacking, the swim speed is nice but it doesn't help offset their slow speed in most situations. So some additional traits would help make the race more viable, but I have no idea what they could be. --Aitharious (talk) 12:49, 19 August 2016 (MDT)
