Talk:Luminary, Variant (5e Class)

I made this because I like the concept of the character's style and subclass evolving over time. Yes, it is unheard of in 5E but by and large, the only difference is that some martial classes can gain spellcasting they more than likely won't outclass an actual spell caster and spell casters will continue having limited martial prowess and survivability. The Hit die is a D8 none of the classes get more than medium armor and none of them have more than a 5th level spell slot. Beyond that the limits on the Advanced Vocations make sure that the Advanced Vocation can be prepared for what types of builds enter that Advanced Vocation. I feel as though this is not unbalanced because of the amount of luck and work that has to go into making crazy ideas work. Also 5e isn't even balanced is you look at it for too long. -EmeraldLance

Problems with the page so far:

  • Zap, kazap, and kazapple all reference spell slots, even though you only get them with certain vocations.
  • Spellcasting gained at third level only goes up to 4th level spells, not 5th.
  • Could possibly get proficiency in two common saving throws (dexterity and constitution).
  • Barely any weapon proficiencies for a martial based class.
  • Shorthands ability scores (Dexterity, not dex.)
  • Uses level x instead xth level wording.
  • A lot of features don't state when uses are regained.
  • A lot of features don't state at which level they are gained.
  • Hyperfocus grants you the ability to heal continuously.
  • Half-Inch messes with the items gained, which is up to DM's discretion only. No class should mess with that.
  • Pitfall doesn't mention which dimensions are for length, width, and depth.
  • Eye for Trouble allows you to know things about other creatures without any practical limits. See the monster slayer ranger subclass to learn how to properly do it.
  • Uses per rest wording.
  • Focus Pocus allows you to just regenerate spell slots without any usage limit, making spell slots be easily regained starting at 7th level.
  • Scourge of the Sea has damage based on the gold you have.
  • A lot of features have unclear mechanics, such as adding level to a spell cast.
  • Forbearance has passive healing without limit. Even the spell regenerate has a time limit, and ring of regeneration doesn't heal anywhere near as much.
  • Prestige subclasses grant an additional spellcasting list.
  • Prestige subclasses grant spellcasting later than 3rd level to non spellcasters. This shouldn't be done.
  • Class name is the same as one of the prestige subclasses.
  • Luminary's Lore changes how much gold you get, and gives you a damage bonus based on the gold duplicated. Also should not happen.

Saying 5e isn't fully balanced is not a defense. This is unbalanced and violates some of the rules to making a balanced class. --Lavie (talk) 15:41, 31 August 2021 (MDT)

So i made some changes to address the points:

  • Zap, kazap, and kazapple all reference spell slots, even though you only get them with certain vocations.
    • The Zap Series now are base on skill points
  • Could possibly get proficiency in two common saving throws (dexterity and constitution).
    • Its is now dexterity plus Charisma or Intelligence
  • Barely any weapon proficiencies for a martial-based class.
    • The martial classes aren't really supposed to be super flexible in the weapons they wield its more about what they have for skills but I have increased the weapons for the martial subclasses
  • Shorthands ability scores (Dexterity, not dex.)
    • I fixed this to the best of my ability but I may have missed some because ctrl+f is kinda wonky sometimes
  • Uses level x instead xth level wording.
    • See above notation(I fixed this...)
  • A lot of features don't state when uses are regained.
    • See above notation(I fixed this...)
  • A lot of features don't state at which level they are gained.
    • See above notation(I fixed this...)
  • Uses per rest wording.
    • See above notation(I fixed this...)
  • Hyperfocus grants you the ability to heal continuously.
    • Hyperfocus now has a limit
  • Pitfall doesn't mention which dimensions are for length, width, and depth.
    • Pitfall now has its dimensions listed
  • Eye for Trouble allows you to know things about other creatures without any practical limits. See the monster slayer ranger subclass to learn how to properly do it.
    • Eye for trouble now has a stricter limit but for the most part I think it should be fine as is
  • Focus Pocus allows you to just regenerate spell slots without any usage limit, making spell slots be easily regained starting at 7th level.
    • Focus Pocus now has a realistic limit, that was genuinely a "my bad" moment.
  • Scourge of the Sea has damage based on the gold you have.
    • Scourge of the Sea now is based on attuned items instead of gold
  • Forbearance has passive healing without limit. Even the spell regenerate has a time limit, and ring of regeneration doesn't heal anywhere near as much.
    • Forbearance now has a limit so it should be okay now
  • Prestige subclasses grant an additional spellcasting list.
    • It is no longer a second spell list it now expands any previously owned spell list
  • Prestige subclasses grant spellcasting later than 3rd level to non-spellcasters. This shouldn't be done.
    • The Subclasses now have 13th level abilities that only apply when the character does not have spell casting but it does still give them access to the spell slots just not the spells.
  • Class name is the same as one of the prestige subclasses.
    • This was changed
  • Luminary's Lore changes how much gold you get, and gives you a damage bonus based on the gold duplicated. Also should not happen.
    • Luminary's Lore got an overhaul

Things i would like explained to me so i can fix them

  • Spellcasting gained at third level only goes up to 4th level spells, not 5th.
    • I dont know what this means so i couldn't do anything about that
  • A lot of features have unclear mechanics, such as adding level to a spell cast.
    • I dont know what this one means so which ones are the ones that need clarity?
  • Half-Inch messes with the items gained, which is up to DM's discretion only. No class should mess with that.
    • It cant duplicate things without the DM's say its just like how wild magic is technically up to the DM's discretion Half-Inch does not violate the DM's control of the items doled out.
