Talk:Katar (5e Equipment)
From D&D Wiki
Not that a katar isn't cool, but for practical purposes this is effectively a more expensive dagger with fewer useful properties. Is there a way to make a bit more unique without making it too powerful? - Guy (talk) 00:49, 16 July 2017 (MDT)
- Not really, honestly I would just treat it as a shortsword. If it is "favoured by monks", then the monk martial arts feature already explains that monk weapons are simply renamed standard weapons. Marasmusine (talk)
- Reading about the historical katar, I'm not sure it could even really be called a monk weapon. It was used as a status symbol.
- I think we should redirect this to Weapon Alternatives (5e Other) and list it under short swords. Marasmusine (talk) 04:14, 16 July 2017 (MDT)
Katar was not a status symbol till the 17th century and it was to be known in use since the 14th century. Also Rajputs and Mughals would even hunt tigers with a pair of katar. For a hunter to kill a tiger with such a short-range weapon was considered the surest sign of bravery and martial skill.
