Talk:Hypnotic Box (5e Equipment)

From D&D Wiki

Jump to: navigation, search

This item shouldn't be allowed to effectively make any amount of creatures be charmed by you for a potentially infinite amount of time. The item should also have a limit on the amount of times you can use it, and no effect should be able to automatically kill a creature. Plus, the creature would have to fail 1440 saving throws to even activate the soul stealing part of this item. Finally, the DC for the uncommon version of this item is too high, which was why the DC scaling was changed.

On a side note, potentially charming just one creature for any amount of time is really powerful, as your entire party can ready an action do deal large amounts of damage to the creature and can just charm them again with the current version of this item.--Blobby383b (talk) 10:22, 1 January 2018 (MST)

The current version of the item also negated creature's immunity to and advantage on charm effects.--Blobby383b (talk) 10:26, 1 January 2018 (MST)

your concerns[edit]

The box has to be cranked, it doesn't kill the creature it puts it in the box, and its a radial of who hears it. the person who is using it can also be charmed. also a high dc in the uncommon makes it a risk even for the user to use, and its a big ol box so its not exactly a combat tool, more of a performance tool. so your concerns for its power are noted, but with its rewording it should be fine. compared to the bardic instruments. of uncommon level and more, this is relatively tame.

a Doss lute: SRD grants Fly, Invisibility, Levitate, Protection from evil and good, and it gives Animal friendship, Protection from energy (fire) and Protection from poison.

all this does is, Radial Charm. (user of the box can be effected) and it doesn't force combat situations its more focused on entertainment and roleplay. Maybe a little in game choas but not much. and the DC is high because of such a large charm area, they still need to be able to hear it, the user and be in its area of 30 feet.

Putting a creature's body and soul into the box is almost the same thing as the threat is dealt with and you don't have to put another creature into the box. Charming yourself to charm a bbeg or several powerful creatures more once is simply broken as it can allow a 1st level party with this item to potential kill a CR 30 Tarrasque through repeatedly charming it (or any level party to charm then damage then charm a creature again). How do bardic instruments even compare to an item that allows you to infinitively charm multiple creatures?--Blobby383b (talk) 10:11, 2 January 2018 (MST)

BTW you never battled a tarrasque because guess what. THEY HAVE ---> Condition Immunities: charmed, frightened, paralyzed, poisoned. --Justsomedndplayers (talk) 14:48, 2 January 2018 (MST)

Read this and the item carefully.[edit]

Firstly, When using the item (in combat) likely hood of a good BBEG failing the save is not likely. Legendary resistances, luck, high stats etc, Succeed on the save and ect.

Secondly, this is not powerful, it is situational. it does 1 thing and that is it. Silence the object, Take it away, break it, Counter Charm, be immune to charmed, be deaf. there are many options to get around this.

Thirdly, HAS TO BE EQUAL TO OR LESS THAN YOUR LEVEL! so no to the ability to put a tarrasque in it with a level 1 character. or did you not read that? Most creatures they can get are Cr 1/8-1 at level 1. And if the creatures can be snapped out of the charm, be immune to charm..ect.
