Talk:Gazer (5e Race)

Hey, you're doing a pretty good job, but this race is way too strong. If you were to measure this race using the Musicus Meter, it would look like this:

  • 3 ASIs: 3
  • 30 feet flying speed: 3
  • Perception proficiency: 0.5
  • Immunity to being prone:0.5
  • Darkvision: 0.5
  • Charm person: 0.5
  • Eye Ray: 1
  • Extra language: 0.5

This comes out to a total of 9.5, which is strong than the best 1st party race, and I didn't even include telepathy or the fact that your darkvision is 120 feet instead of 60. You should consider dropping the fly speed to 10 feet and get rid of Alluring Gaze all together. I'm sure if you asked around, someone who is much more knowledgable with race balancing can help too. --PJammaz (talk) 10:14, 8 March 2020 (MDT)

Musicus Meter[edit]

  • 2 Ability score increases: 2
  • Small: -1
  • 15 feet speed: -1
  • 30 feet flying speed: 3
  • Flying condition: -1
  • Perception Proficiency: 0.5
  • All-Around Vision: 1
  • Immunity to being prone: 0.5
  • Psionic Protection: 0.5
  • Superior Darkvision: 1
  • Eye Ray: 1
  • Extra language: 0.5

Total: 7

15 feet walking speed doesn't mean anything since they can fly as much as they want and their flying speed is 30. Even so, that brings the score to 8, which is much better than it was. --PJammaz (talk) 12:14, 8 March 2020 (MDT)

The race definitely has quite a lot and could use a cutback to balance. The page also should use the correct format of a race so it's not just a block of text. There should be the appropriate sections for appearance, history, as well as society and personality. To balance the race, I think the following changes would help:

  • Change the flying so it's actually more like a hover than flying. Make it so they float only off the ground but cannot rise over 5 feet off the floor with the trait. They therefore keep immunity to most difficult terrain and the prone condition
  • Alluring Gaze is essentially dominate monster with a longer duration and no concentration. Having an 8th-level spell like that at 1st level is unacceptable and utterly broken.
  • Eye Ray is also broken in that 1. it upgrades to two at level 10, when traits usually don't get those kinds of improvements beyond level 5 (unless it's like dragonborn's dice increases) and 2. the entire eye ray table is stronger than the ones that are exemplary on the Beholderborn (5e Race) page.
  • Lastly, telepathy for 120 feet makes it better than the Shardmind (5e Race) and nullifies the need for spells like message.--Yanied (talk) 13:26, 8 March 2020 (MDT)

Balance changes[edit]

  • Removed Alluring Gaze
  • Removed the growth of eye ray with the player
  • Reduced telepathy to 60 feet
