What's so Special About This?[edit]

1d8, Finesse, martial weapon; this is a rapier that is worth x4 the gold and weighs 1lb less. Also, nothing is listed for its 'Special' quality, unless you're referring to the proficiency note. What reason do you have for making this weapon?

This page should be nominated as a featured article for being the first thing I've ever seen that....

  • Was linked to on a third party website
  • by someone who uses it in their game
  • and likes it
  • and the post wasn't followed by laughter/insults.

This item has genuinely improved the game for others in an objective way. As far as I know, that's what this wiki is all about. It deserves some praise. --Kydo (talk) 01:40, 28 July 2017 (MDT)

Kydo, I have nothing but respect for you and others like you. That being said, what are you referring to? We can't see that link visiting this page and there isn't a decent reason, on the surface or otherwise, to use this item in any game. Because someone used it and liked it in theirs is good and all, but this item is a stylistic change to the rapier with a price markup. A callback to older editions and other games doesn't excuse that.

An high elf or wood elf is automatically proficient with an elven thinblade, but not with a rapier, as you acknowledge above. This makes it desirable for elf wizards, etc, as a step up from using a shortsword. Marasmusine (talk) 09:20, 23 September 2017 (MDT)
But a wizard's starting equipment doesn't allow a martial weapon, so they'll have to give 100 gp towards this weapon, wherever they find it, that may easily be less effective than their cantrips, especially to Hit. --GD-Psycho (talk) 19:19, 24 September 2017 (MDT)

Redundancy[edit]

I know that there's already core weapons that are redundant, but this doesn't mean that homebrew should also be redundant. Why just don't use a flavored rapier, if this weapon have no mechanical distinctions from a rapier? Anastacio (talk) 16:57, 30 April 2021 (MDT)

Wood elves and high elves are proficient with an elven thinblade, but not rapiers, as mentioned above. This can also be considered a legacy item, for those converting from 3rd edition.Marasmusine (talk) 15:59, 2 August 2021 (MDT)
