Talk:Dragonborn (4e Racial Trait Variant)
From D&D Wiki
The variant was meant to be a direct upgrade.
I've always felt the Dragonborn was a bit weak and wanted to boost them a bit. I feel like, compared to other races, it's closer to equal now.
- Having it as a direct upgrade effectively punishes the use of the normal dragon born, additionally the dragonborn is one of the most aggressive races in 4e and can be hands down the most powerful if you build around the breath weapon. Having your breath weapon as a direct upgrade makes the dragonborn hands down the best race with a versatile and incredibly powerful breath weapon, The breath weapon needs to have either end of next turn or save ends though on the effect, after thats been done balancing can be achieved properly accounted for. --Aitharious (talk) 07:00, 8 June 2016 (MDT)
- Well, yeah, the general concept is to replace the Dragonborn with this one. As for the Dragon Breath power, the ongoing effect may be a tad OP, but I feel like for a Race that's almost entirely dependent on it's encounter power to separate it out from the other races (lots of races gain a bonus to their healing surge equal to their constitution modifiers with feats, such as the Dwarf), it better be a rocking one. I guess I could make it in to a feat that does it, but then that's just a feat tax.
New Dragonborn Concept[edit]
So the new dragonborn concept has the power as an at-will, but it functions as a standard action. This is the equivalent of a slightly weaker, better scaling version of the half-elf ability to pick up an at-will from another class and use it as an encounter, and at level 11 half elves can use it as an at-will, as well. This starts off as an at-will, but is a bit weaker than many other at-wills. This effectively turns the dragon born race in to hybrid controller, which dramatically impact how the dragonborn can be used as a race.
Alternatively you can use the at-will which allows you to fly instead.
