Talk:Cantrip Combatant (5e Feat)

Need thoughts and concerns and general advice and constructive criticism.

I came across something for this very idea today. I even wanted to use this title "Cantrip Combtant"! lol
Anyhow, I think the cantrip needs to be limited to 1st level caster character or half your caster character level. Otherwise, every melee combatant would be dumb not to take a feat or dip 1 level to get a cantrip to take this and throw 4d10 cantrip to an enemy's face. I also am not keen on the last benefit. I hadn't considered making this a half feat but I think it works. ~ BigShotFancyMan (talk) 11:16, 21 December 2018 (MST)
sorry for double post, I'd rather see you gain a +1 bonus on attack rolls when you use your cantrip as an action vs the last option. ~ BigShotFancyMan (talk) 11:20, 21 December 2018 (MST)

First off, adding your primary ability modifier to cantrip damage is huge. This is not a half feat. If it were just replacing weapon attacks with cantrip attacks, maybe (warcaster has a more limited form of that, but adds advantage on concentration and frees up your hands), but add +5 damage and we are way beyond half a feat. I might even say this is two feats:

Empowered Spellcasting: When you cast a spell, choose one target that you hit with a spell attack roll or that failed its saving throw against the spell. That target takes additional damage equal to your Spellcasting ability modifier with that spell. Choose an additional target if your spellcaster level is at least eleven.* You may not select the same target twice.

  • It would be excessive for a feat to add such a large damage bonus to multiple targets at low levels. As martial characters get more attacks, however, their damage-boosting feats become more powerful, so it's only fair the same applies to casters. That said, the ability modifier is increasing, too, though, so less scaling is needed.

Spell Channeling You can use any weapons you are proficient with as your spellcasting focus, adding it's enhancement bonus (if any) to your spell attack rolls and spell save DC. You can cast spells with somatic components even if both hands are holding weapons or shields with which you are proficient.

Whenever you cast a spell that requires one or more spell attack rolls, you may channel that spell through a weapon you are using as your spell focus. Make a melee attack roll in place of a melee spell attack, or a ranged weapon roll in place of a ranged spell attack, using the range and attack bonus for that weapon and expending ammunition for each target. You may not affect multiple targets channeling a spell through a ranged weapon with the loading property. on a hit, in addition to the spell's effects, the target takes damage of the weapon's type equal to your strength or dexterity modifier (as appropriate for the weapon).

When you use the attack action, or when you use your reaction to make an attack of opportunity, you can replace one or more weapon attacks with a cantrip channelled through your weapon. The cantrip must affect only one target, and does not receive any additional damage for your caster level.*

  • The extra damage dice for cantrips above 5th, 11th, and 17th are compensation for martial classes' extra attack features. If you can use a cantrip in place of only one attack, you shouldn't be getting a multi-attack's-worth of damage out of it. User:Anony9587
