Talk:Blood Angel (Variant) (5e Race)
From D&D Wiki
Great homebrew race. please remove the larger hitbox bit. Variant Tiefling in official book doesn't have it but has wings, it is silly and completely unnecessary. So is the action to initiate flight. that bit is really silly.
I'm not exactly the most experienced player, but I do know for a fact that flight is a broken mechanic in the hands of the players. The Aarakocra from the Elemental Evil book also had a flight speed of 50, and it wasn't impeded by light armour, but was just flatly unusable when wearing medium or heavy armour, instead of reducing the flight speed by 10 per weight class of armour. In the Feats For Races UA, dragonborn got a feat that gave them wings and a 20 foot flight speed, with the restriction of no heavy armour and not exceeding your carrying capacity. Both of these cases are not overly constructive to the game, because the DM has to put in a very large amount of work to balance an encounter around the flight speed a party member may have. Now, if a spellcaster has the Fly spell or something, that's alright enough; they had to expend a spell slot in order to gain the flying speed, but being a race that just simply has a flight speed means that you can just do what is needed for free. As Andrew from DFC puts it: out of combat, it doesn't matter if your flight speed is 20 feet or 100 feet, you may as well assume you have all the time in the world to do what you need to do; and inside of combat, it doesn't matter if you fly 20 feet into the air or 100, anything that doesn't have a ranged attack can't hit you. Now, a monster having a flying speed is actually balanced, and also factors for its CR: half of the difficulty of a Beholder, I'm told, is the fact that it floats well out of reach of your melee guys.
I see what you've done to try and balance this issue, with giving the wings separate health, but that over complicates it, and doesn't resolve the problem: you should be using the flight ability to stay out of reach of any melee attackers, and should be facing and focusing on anything that can still get you. My suggestion is that you either reduce the flying speed significantly, completely bar off usage of medium armour or heavier with it, and give it some form of limit if you are to keep it. Or perhaps just make it so you can glide and prevent fall damage. Point is, flying is broken. --DJD40000 (talk) 10:40, 19 June 2017 (UTC)
- This race is incredibly broken after re-reading through it. I will be re-looking at the race in much more detail attempting to score it using the marasmusine meter with the goal being 4 or 4.5:
- Ability Score Increase(1) 0.5 for choice of an ability score increase and 0.5 for 1 extra ability score
- Wings(4.5) based on your base flying speed of 50ft (10ft fly worth 1), if this was you were unable to fly with medium or heavy armor this would be worth 4 or reducing the duration of flight to 1 hour or 10 minutes and recovered on a long rest would decrease the score as well
- Darkvision(1) worth 1
- Shifting Resistance(1) resistance worth 1
- Healing Touch(6+) much more broken than I initially thought, the number of times you can use it, the amazing effect, and recovered on a short rest make this trait ridiculously broken
- Fractured Wings(0) No negative scores
Base Race Score of at least 13.5
- Celestial Strike(6) re-read trait and I am not completely sure of the score, I know it is a very powerful trait that allows all ranged and melee attacks to ignore most creatures resistances to piercing, bludgeoning, and slashing damage
- Feed off the dead(1) decently strong trait
Oversight by both me(the first time) and creator of the power level of this has created a god-tier race.--Blobby383b (talk) 23:26, 23 July 2017 (MDT)
- Reduced the race's power level down to a reasonable level, if they are any traits people want to substitute for the current traits or add some other trait to the class, people can bring up their ideas for the race here.--Blobby383b (talk) 11:12, 4 August 2017 (MDT)
