Talk:Beast Tamer (5e Class)

Feedback[edit]

The current version of this class has several issues worth addressing and ideally fixing. Here's a few of them:

  • Most this class's features revolve around its beast, but at no point is it stated that the beast is obedient the the tamer or how it behaves. It's unclear if it would even be controlled by the player or the DM.
  • Several aspects of this class don't seem to be built for 5e. E.g., "Knowledge (Nature)" is a 3.5e skill, which in this edition is simply Nature. Multiclass prerequisities seem to imply skill ranks, which similarly haven't been a thing since 3.5e. The term "HD" is used, and its use implies beasts would use it for anything other than hit points. "DR" acts like it stands for Damage Reduction, even though in 5e this is Damage Resistance. Etc.
  • Depending on which beast one chooses, even just from SRD beasts, the balance of this class changes immensely. Compare a black bear to a rat, both of which qualify for Beast Companion. This is only worsened by the fact many features multiply the creature's capabilities rather than simply add to them, or set them to a specific number.

There's other problems worth resolving, like erroneous capitalization (see Help:When to Italicize and Capitalize) and adding several ability modifiers to attack/damage rolls. But, those are the big'uns I noticed. - Guy 10:27, 16 September 2018 (MDT)
