Talk:Arrow of Yondu (5e Equipment)

...Can't get a fix on whether this thing is overpowered, or not powerful enough, for a legendary item. Guess I'll have a better grasp on it when I've played in more high/mid-level campaigns. :/ Knowlessman (talk) 06:10, 18 May 2017 (UTC)
For a legandary it should deal more, I would say change it to rare, or make damage be around 2-4D8
1. You're s'posed to sign Talk posts with four ~'s. 2. Thing is, this doesn't have charges or limited uses; you just walk around making four closeish-range longbow attacks a turn (which is more per turn than a 20th-level Fighter gets to make at-will, and with Action Surge you can boost it to eight attacks in one turn), all day, without spending any resources. - Then again, it's not even you making the attacks, so it's not like you can affect the damage rolls... Although, they don't have to have different targets, either, and I don't think I want to make it so they do. Maybe I could up the damage somewhat, but come to think of it I don't think most characters get to a point where they're doing this much at-will; at-will high-level Fighter maxes out at three attacks with a longbow/heavy crossbow, and an occasional fourth with a greatsword as a bonus action. This ignores Action Surge, of course, but if it's a long enough day with few enough rests, four a turn all day will outpace threes and a couple sixes, and will definitely outpace Fighter in attack-per-turn before Improved Extra Attack; damagewise, I guess it will only outpace Battle Master over the course of a really long day, but considering how good this item and a Rogue are for each other (statwise anyway, given that it doesn't benefit from Sneak Attack), I dunno if a Rogue is supposed to really compete with Fighter all that much as far as raw damage-per-turn. - A 20th level fighter can make four attacks using Extra Attack. Think of the number next to the feature name in the table as "at this level, this fighter can make {number} + 1 attacks when he or she takes the Attack action." SirSprinkles (talk) 22:48, 21 May 2017 (UTC)
- ...Huh. Honestly hadn't bothered to check; I just kind of assumed it stopped at 3 total. Knowlessman (talk) 03:41, 22 May 2017 (UTC)

I really like this. I was thinking of a Dex save based version, but upon further consideration I'm not sure that's better, or that there's a pressing reason for it. Two questions though: Why wouldn't this benefit from sneak attack? Thematically, it's unconventional af, not hard to imagine people being surprised by it. Mechanically, it's an arrow, hence ranged weapon, hence it should get sneak attack. If four attacks + SA is too much, maybe tie the number of attacks to character level, to keep them at pace? Secondly, what do you think of a flat rate of travel? I feel like this should be able to hit more that 40 feet away. What if the arrow could move 120 feet per round total and then returned to you by the shortest path, making no more attacks? You could either zip it back and forth between short-medium range targets, or make one longer ranged attack.Crutchcricket (talk) 09:28, 20 August 2018 (MDT)
