Talk:Arcane Assassin (5e Class)
From D&D Wiki
Looking at This Class[edit]
I will be doing a look through of this class, because at a glance their appears to be several worrying issues with the class. With that said though, lets get started.
- [DONE-Arq] General. The class shouldn't gain class features when it gains a spell slot level, and class names are not capitalized.
- [DONE-Arq] Hit Die. The rouge itself has a d8 hit die and full spellcasters get a d6 or a d8 hit die at the very most. As such this class should not have a d10 hit die and really should have a d6 hit die.
- [DONE-Arq] Weapons proficiencies. Getting proficiency to all martial weapons on a class with sneak attack and spellcasting is far too good. Preferably, you should just gain proficiency with a select few martial weapons or none at all.
- [DONE-Arq] Skill proficiencies. A class that gets spellcasting should also not get access to 4 skill proficiencies. This should likely be reduced to 2.
- [DONE-Arq] Experise. Where is this feature in the class? Also, why is the Blades with no equal feature not listed? Also, how does Arcane Attack work? It is only partially explained in the class's subclasses. Why can it inflict bleeding damage and what is bleeding damage? Why does this class have better the rouge's sneak attack scaling with spellcasting?
- [DONE-Arq] Spellcasting. From the looks of things, this class uses 3/4? spellcasting, yet makes no mention on how it works with multiclassing, doesn't have a disclaimer for using a , 3/4 spellcasting as power spikes at odd/impropriate levels, among ect. other issues. A class's spell list should also be clearly detailed.
- [NOT FIXED-Arq] Blades with no equal. This feature's name should be capitalized, class features should not give equipment or only work with specific equipment, bleeding damage isn't a damage type, no weapon should have an effect that requires an on hit saving throw with every hit, the DC should be 8 + ect., and various other problems
- [DONE-Arq] Ability Score Increase. This feature should be after Cunning Action.
- [DONE-Arq] Cunning Action. If you are going to take a 1st party's class feature, at least word it correctly. See the rouge's Cunning Action.
- [DONE-Arq - now requires a 2nd level spell to be cast to do this] Spell Transfer. You should not be able to exchange spell slots, as all spell slots are not equal when you count just by the spell slot level(ex: 2 1st level spell slots is pretty much always better than a 2nd level spell slot)
- Throwing expertise. If you are not creating a mechanic akin to the paladin's divine smite, effects which consume spell slots should be spells not class features.
- [DONE-Arq] Magic Speed. This feature does not thoroughly explain how it works. Can you only blink once per turn? Does it take an action or bonus action to blink? Can you blink to places you can't see? Can you blink into a creature's space? Ect.
- [DONE-Arq] Free Cunning. There are no free actions in 5e.
- [GONE-Arq] Lucky Magic. What does this feature even do? Since Arcane Attack is unexplained I am unsure.
- [DONE-Arq] Arcane Teleport. Same questions as the magic speed feature except based on how this feature is word if you are damaged you can teleport at any time which isn't ok, the trigger to be able to teleport should be taking damage. Here is an example of how to properly word such an effect (At 20th level, as a reaction to taking damage...)
If needed, I will also go through the subclasses, but based on the base class alone, this class needs a lot of work to be usable.--Blobby383b (talk) 21:49, 9 October 2019 (MDT)
- I think a few of the balance issues could be resolved by coming up with a very specific (not overpowered) set of spells rather than just saying "Here are a few suggestions." One balance advantage of making a specific spell list is that a number of the features can be converted to new homebrew spells. Some good candidates are: Magic Speed, Elusive, Evasion, Spell Transfer, Blades with no equal. Arquebus (talk) 13:33, 23 May 2020 (MDT)
- I would have to agree, having a custom spell list and making a few of the features balanced spells would be step in the right direction for this class.--Blobby383b (talk) 08:49, 29 May 2020 (MDT)

- Arcane Teleport Feature is replaced with Blood Teleport spell Arquebus (talk) 18:54, 1 June 2020 (MDT)
- Hit dice now d8. Arquebus (talk) 19:06, 1 June 2020 (MDT)
- Magic Speed Feature replaced with Magic Speed spell. Arquebus (talk) 19:32, 1 June 2020 (MDT)
- Free Cunning Feature replaced with Cunning Reaction feature. Arquebus (talk) 19:46, 1 June 2020 (MDT)
- I'm ripping out the subclasses and rolling the features I want to keep into the main class. The class already does too many things and is too complicated. Arquebus (talk) 09:48, 9 June 2020 (MDT)
Not Fixed[edit]
I have decided not to fix these problems, as they are key to the class:
- Class features should not give equipment or only work with specific equipment,
- Bleeding damage isn't a damage type
- No weapon should have an effect that requires an on hit saving throw with every hit.

Ready to Playtest[edit]
The arcane assassin was a huge pain to rebuild, but now that I have done it, I am rather happy with it. Arquebus (talk) 18:34, 23 August 2020 (MDT)
I'm really liking this class now, and so I have made it generally available rather than making it exclusive to high ghouls. Arquebus (talk) 16:34, 29 August 2020 (MDT)
Spells Known Per Spell Level[edit]
I don't know who keeps changing this but if there are only seven spells at each level then having spells known per level greater than 7 at higher class levels makes no sense. Arquebus (talk) 14:04, 9 April 2021 (MDT)
