Shadespider[edit]

The spider is the ultimate ambush predator. I become one with the spider with in me so that I may master the art of stealth. I am the spider and you... are my prey.
—Xil'dretha, Shadespider

The shadespider is a master of the ambush. While she does not get any more than the uncanny ability to hide in shadows and call darkness in the way of stealth abilities, she does have the ability to quickly reposition, using the opportunity for a quick sneak attack.

Class Features[edit]

All of the following are Class Features of the shadespider prestige class.

Weapon and Armor Proficiency: Shadespiders gain no proficiency with any weapon or armor.

Hide in Plain Sight (Su): A shadespider can use the Hide skill even while being observed. As long as she is within 10 feet of some sort of shadow, a shadespider can hide herself from view in the open without anything to actually hide behind. She cannot, however, hide in her own shadow.

Spider Companion (Ex): At 1st level, the Shadespider may have a tiny, small or medium monstrous spider as an animal companion, treating her class level in the Shadespider prestige class as her druid level for the perposes of her animal companion.

Spider Jump (Ex): At 1st level as a swift action, the Shadespider gains the ability to travel between two points as if by means of a Dimension Door spell. She can travel up to the number of feet shown in the Spider Jump column of Table: The Shadespider and a maximum total number per day, equal to the value in parenthesis. The spider rider may include her Spider Companion in a Spider Jump. When this ability is performed it appears just like when a Jumping Spider "jumps".

Sneak Attack (Ex): At 2nd level, if a Shadespider can catch an opponent when he is unable to defend himself effectively from her attack, she can strike a vital spot for extra damage.

The shadespider’s attack deals extra damage any time her target would be denied a Dexterity bonus to AC (whether the target actually has a Dexterity bonus or not), or when the shadespider flanks her target. This extra damage is 1d6 at 2nd level, and it increases by 1d6 every two shadespider levels thereafter, up to a maximum of 5d6 at 10th level. Should the shadespider score a critical hit with a sneak attack, this extra damage is not multiplied.

Ranged attacks can count as sneak attacks only if the target is within 30 feet.

With a sap (blackjack) or an unarmed strike, a shadespider can make a sneak attack that deals nonlethal damage instead of lethal damage. She cannot use a weapon that deals lethal damage to deal nonlethal damage in a sneak attack, not even with the usual –4 penalty.

A shadespider can sneak attack only living creatures with discernible anatomies—undead, constructs, oozes, plants, and incorporeal creatures lack vital areas to attack. Any creature that is immune to critical hits is not vulnerable to sneak attacks. The shadespider must be able to see the target well enough to pick out a vital spot and must be able to reach such a spot. A shadespider cannot sneak attack while striking a creature with concealment or striking the limbs of a creature whose vitals are beyond reach.

Darkness (Su): At 3rd level, the Shadespider can use Darkness as a spell-like-ability once per day (the caster level is equal the the Shadespider's class level). The number of times a day she can do this increases by one at 5th level and every 2nd level herafter, up to a maximum of 4 times a day at 9th level.

Swiftstrike (Ex): At 5th level, the shadespider gains the ability to surprise foes with her Spider Jump ability. Whenever the rogue uses her Spider Jump ability to move at least 10 feet, she may make a hide check even without sufficient cover.

Spider Climb (Ex): At 9th level, the Shadespider is treated as being under ther effect of of the Spider Climb spell.
