Physical Description[edit]
Saquli birdmage by Christina Kraus |
The saquli are a race of magically attuned avians, with a high penchant for self aggrandization and boastful shows of superiority. They often take the appearances of many avian species, from tropical birds of paradise, to the great eagles and hawks of the Starfall Mountains, to more rarely wise and majestic owls. Saquli stand typically around the height of your average Grisean at 5 feet, with a diverse array of colors and appearances, though those who do not reside on their island home often display the physical and aesthetic appearance to that of ravens.
History[edit]
Saquli come from an island far off the coast of the mainland continent of Griseos, a place of great magical saturation and potential, it hosts the only saquli city in all the known world. It is here that the saquli practice their dark heresies free from the prying eyes of the Concordat or Communion, unbeholden to the desires of their churches and free from persecution. Still, there are some who strive to join the greater societies of the world, even to their own detriment.
Like the strigoi, the saquli find themselves at the very bottom of the Grisaean societal structure. Despised for their haughty attitudes and lax position towards magic, many Grisaean’s themselves find them to be an overall nuisance and a danger to society, a stance the church has taken to an almost extreme often persecuting them with reckless abandon, however not to the same extent as the strigoi. Though authorities often make them their favored target of their abuses. Despite their stereotype for overbearing self aggrandization and boasting, the Avian race has more than the proper skills to back it up. The saquli are an incredibly magically gifted people, often managing to avoid many of the mutations and debilitating traits that come with using many of the dark arts. This has allowed them to spread the rumor that they are the progenitors of dark magic, showcasing their great skill and freedom in magic as proof of their superiority.
Society[edit]
Saquli society is very free-form, with no sense of rigidness or strict societal hierarchy to it whatsoever. They are only beholden to their own desires and often make no effort to form any higher form of social structure or connection. Despite this the necessity for their species protection has forced them to form a maigocracy that has stood the test of time. The Rhuk'azi maigocracy as it is called is the center of saquli society, lead by none but participated in by all it is where they freely practice their dark arts and give worship to the raven mother. Having no rigid structure, the only ones to make 'laws' or 'decisions' within their society are those at the top of the magiocracy, the most powerful wizards, witches, and sorcerers amongst them. Recognized only for their raw magical talent and little more.

Saquli naming conventions follow, much like their society, a loose structure. However this is the exception when it comes to ancient powerful magi, saquli often copying these names in hopes of producing powerful children.
