The Oncorhynchus rastrosus, or saber-toothed salmon, was an enormous ancestor of the modern Pacific salmon. Its tusk-like projections were not for hunting, but for dominance displays, mating rituals, and possibly jostling with rivals. During spawning runs, these creatures grow dangerously territorial, striking anything that invades their path upstream.
During mating season, the saber-toothed salmon becomes incredibly aggressive towards creatures that enter its spawning territory, typically river mouths or coastal shallows.
