Rookie Pirate[edit]

The journey to becoming a pirate began when you joined a ragtag crew of adventurers looking to make their mark. With little more than raw courage, a sense of wonder, and a natural affinity for the unpredictable, you set sail under the banner of a pirate captain whose dreams of glory matched your own. Although you’re still new to the pirate life, you’ve already learned some hard lessons about loyalty, danger, and the true meaning of freedom. Your captain's ambitions may be lofty, but you’re determined to carve out your own path along the way.

Your skills are a work in progress. You might not yet have the sharpest blade or the fiercest reputation, but you make up for it with an unshakable determination and an instinct for surviving the unpredictable waters of piracy. Whether it’s navigating the stormy seas, holding your own in a scuffle, or earning the trust of your crew, you’re learning what it means to live free. You're driven by the dream of finding your place in a world where anyone can rise to greatness, and the belief that your time will come.

Skill Proficiencies: Choose two between Athletics, Intimidation, Stealth, or Survival.

Tool Proficiencies: One artisan's tools or musical instrument of your choice.

Equipment: A simple weapon of your choosing (most likely a bladed weapon), an Explorers Pack, a trinket from your home or crew, and a coin purse containing 10 gold pieces.

Rookie Role[edit]

d4 Rookie Role
1 Swashbuckler You are a nimble and daring opponent in duels, able to evade enemies and strike hard.
2 Deckhand You were taught how to mend the ins and outs of the ship by others, and contribute to the ships travel.
3 Pirate Scholar You've planned on being a pirate, and have learnt everything about the ins and outs of the lifestyle.
4 Amateur Captain You jumped for the stars upon entering piracy, not wanting to be part of a crew but to lead one with little to no experience.

Feature: Pirate Life[edit]

The crew you travel alongside and the actions you perform at sea will be known, as long as you journey with a jolly roger on your sails civilians of lower class or portside abodes will tend to treat you better out of fear. While marines will attack you on sight if given any hints towards your pirating career.

Alternate Feature: Elite Rookie[edit]

You joined an elite, high standing pirate crew at a younger age as an apprentice, learning skills from experienced pirates who'd been through strange events at sea. When attempting to make deals with pirate crews you may choose to bring up this fact, which may cause other lower ranked pirate crews to be more leanient with you.

Suggested Characteristics[edit]

Pirates are often loyal to their crew and adventurous beyond measure, but can also be cruel and sadistic in the image of society.

d8 Personality Trait
1 I’ve got a lot of confidence, even if I'm still a rookie.
2 I’ve only just joined the crew, but I already consider them family.
3 I believe life should be full of excitement and surprises.
4 There’s always time for me to figure it out later!
5 I try to keep the mood light and fun, cracking jokes and stories to lift the crew’s spirits.
6 I constantly imagine and await the day when my name is known far and wide, and you can command your own ship and crew.
7 The promise of fortune and fame keeps me motivated, and I never let an opportunity slip through my fingers.
8 Sometimes it works out, sometimes it doesn’t, but I believe that luck and guts are more reliable than books and maps.
d6 Ideal
1 Freedom. The sea is my home, and no one can tell me where to go. I seek the freedom to sail where I want, to live how I choose, and to be whoever I want to be. (Chaotic)
2 Ambition. I’m just getting started, but I will rise to the top. I want my name to be remembered—whether it’s for treasure, feats of daring, or the crew I lead. (Any)
3 Loyalty. The crew is family. As long as we sail together, we’ll share everything: the treasure, the fights, and the dangers. (Lawful)
4 Power. Those with power control their own fate, and that the strong have the right to take what they want from the weak. (Evil)
5 Adventure. There’s always something new out there on the horizon. I live for the unknown, the thrill of exploring new lands, and the excitement of finding hidden treasure. (Good)
6 Glory. A pirate’s life isn’t just about survival—it’s about making your mark on the world. I will make my legacy legendary, so that no one ever forgets my name. (Neutral)
d6 Bond
1 I follow my captain because I believe in their vision. Whether it’s a grand treasure hunt or a lofty ambition, I'm with them until the end, hoping that together, we’ll reach that goal.
2 I may have left your old life behind, but my crew is now my home. They’ve got my back, and I’ve got theirs. I’ll do whatever it takes to ensure their survival and success.
3 The ocean is vast and untamable, and I'm drawn to its beauty and danger. It’s my one true constant, my place of freedom, and my sanctuary.
4 Someone who had saved my life early in my pirating days. I owe them a favor, and I'm determined to repay that debt, even if it leads me into dangerous waters.
5 I feel a strong sense of duty to look after those weaker than myself. Maybe there’s a young crewmate, a civilian, or someone who reminds me of my past life, but I’ll always step in to defend them.
6 I really want to find The One Piece
d6 Flaw
1 I tend to jump into situations headfirst, often making reckless decisions in the heat of the moment.
2 My mouth tends to run away with me, whether I'm boasting about my adventures or giving away too much information.
3 A shiny object or a new island to explore might be enough to get me sidetracked from the mission.
4 I tend to think you can handle any challenge, even when I'm outmatched.
5 Whether it’s a card game, a drinking contest, or a challenge to board a rival ship, I can’t resist the chance to prove myself, even if the odds aren’t in my favor.
6 I tend to blow through your earnings, which doesn’t bode well for the long-term.
