Rolling-for-Abilities-in-Order But Balanced (5e Variant Rule)
From D&D Wiki
When determining your ability scores during character creation, use the following method.
First, your ability scores all start at 10.
Second, roll a d6 six times. Depending on the result of each roll, do one of the following:
- Increase your Strength by 2.
- Increase your Dexterity by 2.
- Increase your Constitution by 2.
- Increase your Intelligence by 2.
- Increase your Wisdom by 2.
- Increase your Charisma by 2.
Third, roll a d6 two more times. This time increase the corresponding ability score by only 1 for each roll.
Finally, you can swap any two of these ability scores.
The most likely results will usually be similar to the standard array, with one or two +2 abilities, one or two +1s, and two or three +0s. Though very unlikely, it is still possible to start with a +4 or even a +5, but in this case your other ability scores will be lower to compensate.
