Among the sloths of Kaimere, the gopher sloths, descended from mylodontin sloths[1] such as Simomylodon,[2] are the most abundant and diverse clade of sloths. The river sloths of the genus Potamocnus ("river sloth") are a fairly successful genus of this clade, so named for their preference of having burrows close to lowland rivers and wetlands. Despite digging complex burrows into the banks of waterbodies and retreating to water when threatened away from their den, they don't typically seek out wetland vegetation, instead preferring grasses, ferns and low hanging branches to feed on. Like the massive hukolgur, their reputation for violence is not representative of reality: they typically only fight when cornered or near their den, and the latter is the cause of many attacks since these sloths like to make homes near the same rivers people often use for drinking water. Potamocnus is a primarily Ni’Khari genus, with three species in the Crescent alone, though their most successful species, the red river sloth (P. rhodocheros), spread south to Arvel 1.5 mya during the low sea levels. The fur of river sloths is actually quite thin and doesn't offer much cold tolerance, mostly being for their skin against sunburn. Sows live in small groups of related animals but boar are mostly solitary.

Variant: Seridic River Sloth

The Seridic river sloth (P. amphibius) is mostly hairless and is the only semi-aquatic species in the genus, sinking to the bottom like a hippo. Perhaps a little ironically, limited fossil study suggests that they were much more common before the arrival of the hippopotamus, though their versatile diet has helped them survive: they need some grass in their diet but as long as they meet that requirement, they can avoid grass patches and competition from hippos. A Seridic river sloth has the following trait:

  • Dense. The sloth always sinks in water. It ignores the extra movement cost for moving through water
