Rat-bite fever is/was also known as Haverhill fever. As suggested, it is caused by rat bites or by introducing wounds to an infected object. It causes general malaise and is nonfatal.
If the PC fails the check by more than 10 points, s/he becomes exhausted instead of nauseated.
