Races (Macaria Supplement)

There is a wide range of races that live as citizens of Macaria and its fellow nations, each with a long history and rich culture. Some of the rarer races live in isolation, away from modern society. While other races have adapted to the industrial way of life in order to survive and thrive.

Dwarves[edit]

The cave dwelling hardy race of Dwarves is an ancient one, hailing from the old world they travelled to Macaria in search of its grand caves and mountains which almost put the ones of the old world to shame, these grand caves cities being the hub of dwarf society. Most normal cities also have underground districts in which dwarves prefer to live.

Dwarves have lived in Macaria alongside humans ever since the initial resettlement of the continent, and they usually get along fairly well. Dwarves are heavily integrated into Macarian society, however they also retain their unique culture. Dwarves organize themselves into clans based on family ties, taking great pride with their families status. Some dwarf clans take the form of crime families, with larger ones allowing those they deem fit to enter the clan.

The seat of dwarven culture is the underground city of Goldkeep. Goldkeep is the second largest city in the province of Vyluna, known for its many casinos and flashing lights. Goldkeep is controlled by the Coalbrands, a dwarvish clan and criminal syndicate known for running the many casinos inside the city.

Most dwarves worship Taivas after the dwarven pantheon were slain in the Second War in Heaven, while some cling on to their dead gods. The largest of these cults is the Cult of Mondull, who congregate in secret at gigantic underground mausoleum to the dead god.

Hill Dwarves[edit]

Hill Dwarves are dwarves who are more accustomed to life above ground, either in the rural hills or bustling cities. This has forced them to be tougher in order to adapt. Many of the dwarves who decided to travel to Macaria were hill dwarves, with many proud clans of hill dwarves making up a large population of the east coast.

Mountain Dwarves[edit]

When the deep cave expanses were all claimed, many dwarves turned to the expansive Redpeak and Deepridge mountains. Because of these mountain ranges proximity to the dust bowl, they were hired alongside the orcs to deal with the armies of Sakaal. This military legacy leaves many mountain dwarves with experience in wearing armor.

Duergar[edit]

When all life was eradicated from the Macarian continent, the dwarves sealed themselves deep underground as to escape the chaos on the surface. These dwarves remained there for millennia, eventually becoming the duergar. Their culture is completely alien to any other type of dwarf, worshipping the long forgotten native gods.

Duergar or Grey Dwarves rarely interact with the outside world, those who do are usually those who were banished from their underground cities. Surface dwelling duergar are ostracized by the surface for their alien ways, and they do not consider themselves related to the rest of the dwarves. Their ancient tradition of magic naturally puts many surface dwelling duergar at odds with the government. Duergar often join the mafia due to having nowhere else to turn.
