Piltoveran (5e Background)
From D&D Wiki
Piltoveran[edit]
Crest of the City of Progress |
You hail from the glittering city of artisans, engineers, and the greatest minds in the world. Gleaming towers of burnished metal, seamless hextech machinery, bustling markets and artful traders of all crafts flock to Piltover in search of fortunes in a city where dreams are said to flourish. The people of Piltover see everything through rose-colored glasses, enjoying their technological gifts and superiority to greatest excess. Their governance seeks to keep this machine running smoothly at any cost, keeping the city's deep and dark secrets masterfully hidden behind colorful and distracting inventions.
In truth, Piltover's happiness and prosperity depends heavily on the undercity of Zaun, hidden under the cliffs on which Piltover itself was built. The undercity is commonly heard of and not truly seen, as Piltover's factories hide much of the dark Zaun under a shroud of choking smog. Piltover's citizens commonly speak of its sister city as a slum, but truly educated Piltoverans know that Zaun provides immeasurable amounts of pleasure, illegal technology, and otherwise unattainable brainpower to their own forces. The day when Zaun rises will be when Piltover falls, and so that must be prevented at all costs.
When making a character of this background, consider what kind of person you are in Piltover. Are you an artisan, craftsman, engineer, or something niche? Do you seek riches and fame as an inventor, maybe? Do you dabble in the complex government, ruled by ancient clans in the courts? Do you know of the zaunites and Zaun? If so, are you aware of the toxic, symbiotic relationship between the cities, or do you choose to ignore it? Piltover's specialization in hextech relies a good deal on crystals, leading to some use of Zaun's infamous chemtech to reproduce en masse. It is possible for one to be part of that exchange without knowing.

What do you do in Piltover to contribute the the beautiful City of Progress?
d6 | Specialization |
---|---|
1 | Politician. Politics are a bit of a labyrinth in the city, with many holes in law built to benefit those crafty enough to find them. You are an outsider to the clan system who has learned to use these rules to your advantage. |
2 | Clan Influencer. The origins of Piltover's prosperity depend on the generosity of the first clans, like Ferros. These families wield enormous power in Piltover's laws and politics, including keeping Zaun at its knees. |
3 | Merchant. You're here to seek fortunes and exchange goods, leading a simple life among the many others who know Piltover. |
4 | Peacekeeper. Piltover law enforcement not only is present in Piltover, but in Zaun as well. They have the nasty job of avoiding corrupting their own values as they seek to uphold the law in a place of social inequality |
5 | Artisan. Creators in Piltover enjoyed celebrated statuses if their works are useful and recognized to be worthy of reproduction and sale. Many a dream has materialized from such successes. |
6 | Researcher. Those who studied the sciences were crucial to helping inventors. They encompass not only the lab people, but also the field workers and material suppliers who handled dangerous and volatile chemicals a lot. |
Feature: Piltie's Privilege[edit]
Coming from such an illustrious city has its perks. You are recognized as one who has lived around superior technology. You would be a fascinating colleague to exchange with for other people interested in hextech, including scholars, merchants, and nobles. People outside Piltover would not fail to give you glances as well as queries of curiosity. Since Piltover is of well-repute, you may be able to parley this particular attention into access to people and also the places that you might not otherwise you might have.
Suggested Characteristics[edit]
Piltover's gilded edge is rumored to be able to harden the kindest of hearts. This bespeaks of the mixed nature of the city and its people, who are not all glittering, beautiful paragons of an upright life.
