A phlegonian dragons don't have scales. Rather, they posses a thick hide that varies in color from metallic crimson to deep blood red that has been toughened by frequent lava bathes. The strength of its hide increases as the dragon ages, becoming thicker and harder. Its hide constantly burns with hellish flames and glows with heat. These effects intensify when the dragon is angry or about to attack, giving off an odor of sulfur and brimstone. Their vibrant color and glow makes phlegonian dragons impossible to miss in their dark, cavernous lairs. However, they often sleep in the many pools of lava that dot their territory.
Phlegonian dragons love to spend their time wading in the calderas that surround their lairs, usually fully submerging themselves in the lava.
Phlegonian dragons lair in vast underground caverns of icarus earth, where they also store their treasure. Although they collect anything that looks valuable, they prefer items that have significant heat resistance. However they will occasionally leave piles of coins in heated hole in the ground to create pools of molten metal, usually gold or bronze.
COMBAT[edit]
Typically, phlegonian dragons attack from above with their breath weapon then dive into large lava pools until they can use it again. Older dragons use their special abilities, such as hellfire storm, to strike their target from above while the simultaneously attacking with a recharged breath weapon from the safety of the lava. Phlegonian dragons run from a fight only if they are severely damaged, since they view retreat as cowardly.
Breath Weapon (Su): A phlegonian dragon has one type of breath weapon, a cone of hellfire.
Flamewheel (Ex):
Lava Breathing (Ex): A phlegonian dragon can breathe in lava indefinitely and can freely use its breath weapon, spells, and other abilities while submerged.
Destroy Water (Sp): A phlegonian dragon of any age can use this ability three times per day to cause all water within range to evaporate. It works like the create water spell, except that the dragon can destroy water instead of creating it, which automatically spoils unattended liquids containing water. Magic items (such as potions) and items in a creature’s possession must succeed on a Will save (DC equal to that of the dragon’s frightful presence) or be ruined. This ability is the equivalent of a 1st-level spell.
Rain of Hellfire (Sp): A old or older phlegonian dragon can cause 2d4 orbs of hellfire to rain from the sky for 3 rounds. Any creature struck by one of these orbs takes 2d6 points of bludgeoning damage (no save) and receives no saving throw against the orb’s hellfire damage (see below). If a targeted orb misses its target, it simply explodes at the nearest corner of the target’s space. You may aim more than one meteor at the same target. Once an orb reaches its destination, it explodes in a 40-foot-radius spread, dealing 6d6 points of hellfire damage to each creature in the area. If a creature is within the area of more than one sphere, it must save separately against each.
This ability counts as a breath attack use and neither can be used for 1d4 rounds after one has been used.
Other Spell-Like Abilities: 3/day—ventriloquism (adult or older); 1/day—hallucinatory terrain (old or older), veil (ancient or older), mirage arcana (great wyrm).
Skills: Bluff, Hide, and Spellcraft are considered class skills for phlegonian dragons.
