Patch of Sand (5e Hazard)
Patch of Sand[edit]
OMEN/SIGN: The skeleton of a slain creature lies crumpled atop a flat patch of sand, a rusted sword thrust through it's chest. EFFECT: The patch of sand is very slippery. Any party member approaching the skeleton (mundane, not undead) must make a DC 16 Dex save or slip on the patch of sand. On a failed save, the hapless adventurer rolls 1d6 to determine the outcome: (1) fall on your own weapon, or the skeleton's rusty sword, for 1d3 piercing damage, (2) fall and puncture a waterskin/potion/holy water flask; its contents are now lost in the sand, (3) fall on your face and get sand in your eyes, you're blind for three rounds, (4) fall and get the wind knocked out of you; for one minute you can't speak and -3 to hit, (5) you twist an ankle, half speed for one day, (6) you sprain your wrist; -1 to hit until next long rest. REWARD: A slipping character realizes (no skill check required) that the sand can be either (A) thrown at an enemy's feet to make them slip and fall prone (DC 16 Dex save), or (B) thrown in an enemy's face (DC 12 Dex save) to blind them for two rounds. You can scrape together enough sand from the patch for 4 uses [4 charges]. DM TIP: Place the sand patch near a monster's lair (choose a monster with eyes and legs that, if dead, would have a skeleton similar to that of the slain creature) so that the sand can be used almost immediately against the monster.
