Physical Description[edit]

A Nu Mou Wizard, by Square Enix

A nu mou shares most of its outward appearance with canines. Their head and facial structure are distinctly doggish and their legs are digitigrade with dull, blunt claws. Their ears, however, are more like a rabbit's; long and flat, so much so that they droop down past their shoulders. Their ears full length stops anywhere between their elbows and their knees. The tips always have a hole at the end of them that are commonly decorated with heavy jewelry or other accessories. They have dull or pale fur coating their skin, with shades varying between individuals, contrasting with their head and facial hair that grows in a shocking white variety. Behind them drags a long thick tail that tapers to a point. Although usually covered in the same brown fur, it sports a mane of a more sandy or orange color. They often have a hunched over stature that makes them appear smaller than they really are laid out.

History[edit]

The nu mou are a small population of indigenous creatures that have learned to manipulate the sources of magic in nature through their years of existence. Due to their ill-suited bodies for combat, nu mou ancestors developed techniques to manipulate sources of magic like the mist and bend them to their use. This propelled their status as wise users of magic with even temperament. Nu mou live often in small secluded groups, being a reserved race. These groups are scattered across Ivalice. They are generally a race which loves music and scholarly work as opposed to combat and violence. Few historians would argue against nu mou having lived a very peaceful, if not boring, history of little conflict with outsiders. Often instead, nu mou will help those who stumble wounded onto their territories and use their magic for offense only in the more dire situations.

There have been some scant moments of darkness in nu mou history, however, particularly when nu mou joined larger, darker sects for personal gains. a nu mou by the name of Ashkroft, for example, took on the ways of the dark arts and became a master so vile he had to be sealed away. Other nu mou have ventured on their own and become hermits or magic chop owners. Wherever they go, they take their lores and traditions of legends of espers and magic with them.

Society[edit]

Nu mou take up pursuits in artistic and intellectual occupations, typically finding work as artisans of fine crafts, alchemists, scribes and merchants. Many are often scholars of magic, some even claiming the title of wizard, mage, or healer in their careers. They commonly take steps to avoid danger, their short size not lending well to a fight. As such, finding them outside of towns, cities, or other areas without protection is unlikely, though some do live in groups close to sacred areas with others of their own, however. When dangerous travel is required or fighting will be had, they prefer to keep the company of those more suited to the disciplines to help them. The nu mous value knowledge highly over all else, making their lives almost centralized around it one way or another. You will be hard pressed to find a nu mou not interested in the search of knowledge or passing on wisdom.

They are generally interested in scholarly activities and music. The nu mou are a people of legends and tradition, passing down many tales, their most well known being the legend of the espers. Nu mou have the capability to call upon other monsters and use their abilities. A reserved race, nu mou generally live quiet lives, either away from other races, or just in quiet from others. Most are found on the sacred Mt Bur-Omisace where, as part of the Kiltia sect, they take care of pilgrims and those wounded by war. Their even temperament make them a level head to have in one's circle and most races find them amicable and highly capable of co-existence.
