Nonmagical Engine[edit]

This component might be a gnomish contraption, chemical rocket or combustion engine that can propel the vessel slowly through space or atmosphere without requiring a spelljammer helm. They do not provide enough thrust to leave a planet.

A vessel's atmospheric, wildspace and tactical speed is 20 mph per engine component.

Travel within a crystal sphere can take years with this propulsion method, but it can be used to pass through sargassos (magic-dead regions of space), or for lifeboats.

Fuel

The engine requires some kind of fuel. The type of fuel varies, but generally costs 20 gp per ton. In an atmosphere, 1 cargo hold's-worth of fuel powers one engine for 1 hour. In wildspace, 1 cargo hold's-worth of fuel powers the engines for 1 month.

A rock gnome engine requires 2 power points to function, but costs half as much. Without a spelljammer helm, the duration of a rock gnome powerplant is reduced for atmospheric flight: mainsprings last for 2 minutes (enough for a descent or boarding action); aeolipiles and coal-fired boilers last for 1 day.

Requirements

The vessel also needs a (non-spelljamming) helm.

Undersized

An undersized nonmagical engine gives a speed of 7 mph.

Half-sized

A half-sized nonmagical engine gives a speed of 10 mph.
