Nix[edit]

Faer thee not the waters of the nixies widdout a wee toin ov dee 'ead, lest ye want thine back nailed dead.
—"Haeglin Swamp", Book of Children's Fey Rhymes

Physical Description[edit]

A nix, plural nixen, is a sort of fey creature resembling a short humanoid with glossy skin that looks like the surface of picturesque water. They are entirely hairless and generally about the size of dwarves, but not so stout in stature. Their bodies are more dexterous and very fluid in movement, to the point some call them water fairies. They are known to have two large ears that stick out over their head, resembling a fox's pointed ears. Most nixen have either red or yellow gem-like eyes. Nixen have very smooth skin and slender bodies. But the ends of their limbs are described as stumpy, with three fingers per hand and three toes per foot. A thin, rope-like tail covered in the same smooth skin stretches out from between their legs. The skin on nixen is known to "dissolve" when they are submerged in water, allowing them to hide their appearance extremely well.

History[edit]

It is said nixen are relatives of naiads and maybe marids from the Plane of Water. Some theories say they are actually fey that happened to migrate and adapt to aqueous environments. This is supported by a rather mischievous streak they have. They are, by no means, newcomers to the Material Plane. They have been in many stories concerning hazards of strange bodies of water within still forests and woodlands. Nixen tend to be tricksters upon those who travel to their ponds and lakes and are disrespectful towards it. They have been known to moisten certain roads and make them nearly impossible to cross by horse or carriage. Some will spoil rations by getting them wet and moldy. More malicious acts include violence just short of murder, though nixen will tell you that it was probably a water weird instead. Regardless, the nixen are seen to be troublemakers from the wild that don't like to cohere to rules of society.

Society[edit]

Groups of nixen are known as puddles. They are known only to convene in this fashion within their home in the Feywild, which is a place of springs that chaotically change color and scenery. Outside of that, nixen are fairly solitary and will usually claim small bodies of waters as their own. They do so in more naturesque environments, like swamps, small lakes, and such. They avoid places that other creatures may frequent too much, like a common watering hole or a place that has a large predator already in it. Some nixen have been seen around swamps where green hags lurk, but they are not known to associate with them. Some druids who have made contact with a nix state that nixen seek only to protect the pristine status of the waters they inhabit from influences like that of Erathis.

Nix Names[edit]

Similar to the more elusive creatures that wander the world, nixen are very protective of their true names. Their names made up of a mess of vowels, supposedly like a branch of Aquan tongue. They usually have nicknames from a very young age that they use as an alias to keep themselves anonymous. These nicknames are usually conceptual terms that appeal to them personally, and they pick these out themselves. Both these name groups are not gendered.
