Metamage Specialist[edit]

"You may be a practitioner of magic, but I am a master of it. Comparing us would be like comparing a master artisan to a child's chalk doodles."

Class Features[edit]

All of the following are class features of the Metamage Specialist.

Spellcasting: At each level after 1st, you gain new spells per day and an increase in caster level (and spells known, if applicable) as if you had also gained a level in a spellcasting class to which you belonged before adding the prestige class level. You do not, however, gain any other benefit a character of that class would have gained. If you had more than one spellcasting class before becoming a magical trickster, you must decide to which class to add each level for the purpose of determining spells per day, caster level, and spells known.

Bonus Metamagic Feat (Ex): At each Metamage Specialist level you gain a new metamagic feat you qualify for.

Metamagic Familiarity (Ex): The Metamage Specialist is able to reduce the cost of one specific metamagic feat they know by 1 (to a minimum of +1). Once chosen it cannot be changed. They gain this ability again at every level. These can be applied to the same or different metamagic feats, the final cost of a metamagic feat can not be reduced below 1 regardless of how many times this is applied.

Metamage Manipulation (Ex): A Metamage Specialist can attempt to spontaneously apply any metamagic feats you know to a spell without increasing it's casting time or spell level by risking their physical health. The Metamage Specialist must make a Fortitude save, DC 5 + double the final modified spell level. If successful you cast the spell with the metamagic feats you applied, but you take nonlethal damage equal to the spell level increase the metamagic feats would have applied. If you fail by 5 or less you still cast the spell without the metamagic feats and you take lethal damage equal to the spell level increase the metamagic feats would have applied. If you fail by more than 5 you fail to cast the spell entirely and lose the spell slot as if you had cast the spell, additionally you take lethal damage equal to double the final spell level the spell would have cost. For example if you were to try to cast an extended (+1) and quickened (+4) mage armor (1) the DC would be 17 (5 + 2 x (1 + 4 + 1)). If the fortitude save is successful you would gain the benefits of all the metamagic feats and take 5 points of nonlethal damage. If the fortitude save failed by 5 or less you would get the benefits of mage armor without the metamagic feats and take 5 points of lethal damage. If you fail the fortitude save by more than 5 you fail to cast the spell entirely, but you still expend the spell slot. Additionally you would take 12 points of lethal damage. All damage inflicted is raw magical damage that bypasses all immunities, resistances & reductions. This damage can be healed normally like any other damage. Using this class feat it is possible to cast a spell more powerful than you normally would be able to, but the final spell level cannot exceed 9th level unless you have the Epic Spellcasting feat.

Metamage Mastery (Ex): The pinnacle of metamagic mastery, at 5th level the Metamage Specialist can choose to automatically succeed the fortitude save required by Metamage Manipulation once per day and take no damage from it at all.
