ACTIONS

Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +3 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 6 (1d10 + 1) piercing damage, and the target is grappled (escape DC 12). Until this grapple ends, the target is restrained, and the mawface can't bite another target.

The mawface is a unique mutant of a hyena. They are commonly sighted within hyena packs throughout northwestern Edim, particularly in the Daneshi Savannah and the Ty'Sava Bushland. They are said to birthed once for every 50 normal hyena cubs. They are best known for having a huge, trap-like maw that is vertically oriented unlike the usual jaw of a hyena. This maw is lined with teeth like that of a shark's. Additionally, they have four nostrils, two on each side of the maw, and four eyes. Like a hyena, they have a spotted pelt, but theirs is notably thicker. Hunters in the area can use this to make hide armor, and some specialized leatherworkers can even make ad hoc leather armor if necessary.

Tactics

The strange appearance of mawfaces makes them somewhat fearsome even to their own kind. Hyena hunting packs usually have only one or two mawfaces. Unlike normal hyenas, who are scavengers, mawfaces are also active hunters by instinct. They like to snap their jaws shut on creatures to bind their movements so that others of their pack can converge and attack en masse. One can interpret some mawface behavior as the leading member of a pack.
