The marsupial lion, known to scholars as Thylacoleo ("pouch lion"), is a rare mammalian predator, unlike any other in the world. A relative of koalas and kangaroos, marsupial lions are powerful, robust ambush predators, with hand-like paws that terminate in hooked claws, the thumb claw especially being large, and the most unusual teeth of any mammalian carnivore on the planet: with two rodent-like incisors and a single blade-like molar. While this may seem beguiling, marsupial lions are efficient and formidable predators, armed with strong arms to grapple prey and among the most powerful bites of any mammal. |
