Kigrids are somewhere between a panther, black bear, and grick. The legs, tail, ears, and red eyes of a kigrid are lean and quick; feline. Meanwhile, the body, neck, and head of a kigrid are broad and squat; ursine. At the same time, the head of a kigrid ends with a beak surrounded by four teethed tentacles, while their skin is stony and slimy. Kigrid are intelligent enough to be taught a howling dialect of Undercommon, which mind flayers often do in order to use them as beasts of burden, always with strict supervision. They are clever hunters, primarily preying on saltors and their own weaker kin, sometimes even using Undercommon to lure them into ambushes or to direct adventurers through hazards to weaken them. Like most illithidae, their slain prey serves as both food and as a host for their parasitic offspring to mature, inserted via their beak. Once kigrid spawn reach maturity, they burst from the corpse's bloated form and immediately either tear each other apart or flee to the furthest reaches of darkness they can find. Illithidae. Kigrids are a member of the order illithidae, a classification of life that hails from the same strange world as mind flayers. Wherever mind flayers settle, other illithidae begin to appear, though it is unknown whether this is deliberate, or a result of stowaways. Universally, illithidae begin as parasites in a living host, which more often than not dies upon maturation. |
