Of the raptorial urvogel firebirds, the most abundant by far is the karakai (Dolarakos ailoheirax or Pyrostrixus pennafelis depending on which school of thought on their taxonomy you subscribe to). These are the smallest of the raptorial urvogels and also the most social, with decentralized groups of dozens sharing overlapping ranges. They generally prefer small game, especially tiny rodents, but in groups can take down prey orders of magnitude larger than their five pound weight class. Their high intelligence has contributed to their reputation as tricksters in Pakardiant folklore for which they are admired, especially by the Firebird Clan who use karakai as their sigil. While listed as a "domestic" species, the process of karakai domestication is more similar to that of cats, where they semi-domesticated themselves due to close proximity with people, and really the only difference between wild and domestic karakai is the latter is found in a wider variety of color morphs and are very slightly smaller than wild individuals. |
