Horned devils - also known as war devils, cornugons or malebranches - originate from the sixth and seventh planes of Hell. They are the least of the greater devils and hate anything stronger than themselves and fear stronger devils accordingly.

Play a horned devil if you want...

  • To have an evil heritage
  • To eventually gain the ability to fly.
  • To be a member of a race that favors the fighter, warlord and barbarian classes.

Physical Qualities[edit]

Adventuring horned devils look like their true cousins - hulking, winged, scaly humanoids with a pointed, prehensile tail, a gargoyle-like face and of course a prominent set of horns. However, they have forfeited their large size in order to gain the freedom to travel freely beyond Hell's borders. Their scales are most commonly blood red.

Playing a Horned Devil[edit]

Horned devils hold grudges against any offense, and do not forgive easily. They were made for war, and are always preparing for conflict. Of the devils, they are the most inclined to use tactics in battle - gaining advantage through reconnaissance where possible, and marshaling soldiers on the field.

There are very few reasons why a malebranche would be adventuring. As a devil they are bound by the laws of Hell, but as a greater member of their species, they have corresponding sway in petitioning for travel beyond their plane. Reasons might include avenging an affront, seeking to aid in a grand battle or genuine wanderlust. Alternatively, a horned devil may have been abandoned after a particularly chaotic battle in the Blood War, or may have been summoned by a wizard of inadequate merit and set loose on the material plane. In any event, a horned devil free to travel outside Hell is depowered - a diminished stature (although he still towers above humans).

Horned Devil Adventurers[edit]

Three sample horned devil adventurers are described below.

Corenar is a male horned devil barbarian. He has dedicated his existence to hunting summoned demons and destroying them. As he was meditating, a hezrou was summoned in the forest. Prompted by the sounds of trees crashing to the ground and creatures running around him, he ran to the demon. When he saw what he had to fight, he devised some tactics, not knowing the hezrou's own powers. Once he entered close enough, he felt a nausous feeling come over him. Still, he persisted in the battle. But with his nausea, he couldn't defeat the creature. As one blow struck him, he fainted from his wounds. The last thing he saw of the battle was a group of adventurers fighting the hezrou. Later, he woke up to see that these travelers were taking care of him. He later learned that they were on a quest to overthrow the Demon kingdom. His eyes gleamed, and he joined their group to help them and fulfill his goal.

Kenar is a female horned devil fighter. She was enlisted in a small group at a small outpost. After one particularly gruelling battle at this outpost, she was summoned to the king's castle to be commended for her bravery. But she had suspicions about this king. "It doesn't seem like him," she thought to herself. Since she was a skilled climber, she hauled herself to the king's window. What she saw inside surprised her: "A changling? How is this possible?". The changling, now mimicking the king once more, turned around and called for the guards. The soldiers stormed into the chamber and flung open the windows, firing their crossbows at Kenar as she glided down on her wings. Over the following days, she tried to make people rebel against the king, but was met with disbelief and exiled from the city. In the wastelands, she found some adventurers that were willing to help her in her quest. Later, she found out that the changling was a wizard who specialized in mind control.

Venar is a male horned devil warlord. He served under Bel, and was successful leading the armies of Hell into dozens of incursions into the elemental chaos. Over the course of the campaign, he found he had his nemesis in the form of the demon Shedim, and he doggedly sought out battles against him. When Shedim was summoned to the material plane by a powerful wizard, Venar petitioned for, and was granted, his pursuit. In the mortal realm, he was quick to swear fealty to a local duke for the purpose of commanding a detachment of soldiers.
