Hobgoblins (Foundation Lands Supplement)

A slave turns against their master and saves a dwarf. The dwarf grants any request to pay his debt. Weeks of travel, the crossing of the northern sea, weeks of service, a debt paid and the Dwarf leaves in his ship. The Dwarf met unorganized savages, and left the most effective shield and spear phalanx ever trained.

A single tribe learned the Dwarven tactics and in less than decade conquered the entire northern region of the old continent. Five more years and the unified Hobgoblin and Bugbears tribes from the north crossed south through the long clay desert and attacked the Orcs in their home land. This marked the end of orcs in Karandir, and the start of the Goblinoids domain.

Hobgoblins then built mighty fortresses and cities, contacted every other empire meeting little or face value support. They used their gold mines to hire many professionals from other lands and learn from them, innovating little or nothing on any topic besides military tactics. The goblins that serve them became experts in creating cheaper imitations of many objects bought abroad, from armors to chariots, goblins would copy anything.

One of the main trait of this race is belligerence and order. To keep the population under control and allow for social mobility (at least among Hobgoblins) wars between cities are institutionalized, requiring the loser to pay the victors. Their battles often involve a few hundred warriors, and sometimes even a couple thousand.

Hobgoblin Lands[edit]

Every town has a fighting ground and while most fights are not to the death, casualties happen. Watching this sport became so popular among foreigners that many “Hob Circles” were set up in foreign lands, especially Gadiria and the lake cities. In the north of Karandir, rectangular stone buildings with telescopic entrances and two or three floors are common while in the south wood is more prominent. The greatest festival in the south is the renewal contest, were mixed groups of Hobgoblin and goblins compete against one-another to build a tower in under one week, a house in under three days and a the longest wall section in a day. In this festival all the previous champions of the pits can be challenged every day, normally the challengers organize themselves to decide who will have the honor that day and only the bravest take more than a challenge a day.
