High Incantatrix (3.5e Prestige Class)
From D&D Wiki
High Incantatrix[edit]
“ | I have learned to control the energies at the core of all magic. The insight I have obtained is far beyond your imagination. | ” |
—Annabel Lightwind, Human High Incantatrix |
High Incantatrixes are spellcasters who study spells that affect other spells. As well as spells that have great effectiveness against extraplanar beings. They study the arts of metamagic to improve their spells and understanding of the essence of magic.
Becoming a High Incantatrix[edit]
A high incantatrix is a scholar of metamagic, most prominent in the land of faerun. Through devotion to the art they have unlocked greater secrets into the mysteries of magic than nearly any other spellcasters. This allows them to manipulate spells with greater ease through the use of metamagic arts.

Class Features[edit]
Spellcasting: At each level, you gain new spells per day and an increase in caster level (and spells known, if applicable) as if you had also gained a level in a spellcasting class to which you belonged before adding the prestige class level. You do not, however, gain any other benefit a character of that class would have gained. If you had more than one arcane spellcasting class before becoming a high incantatrix, you must decide to which class to add each level for the purpose of determining spells per day, caster level, and spells known.
Instant Metamagic: This ability functions identically to the incantatrix's class feature. Every other level the high incantatrix gains an additional use of this ability per day.
Heighten Metamagic: The high incantatrix gains the Heighten Spell metamagic feat as a bonus feat. If the high incantatrix already has the heighten spell feat then she may choose another metamagic feat that she meets the prerequisites for instead. In addition spells placed in higher leveled spell slots by the use of metamagic feats function as spells of that level. For example normally a widened fireball is a 7th level spell but still functions as 3rd level spell in all other respects such as the DC of the spell. A high incantatrix has overcome that limitation and thus spells prepared in higher leveled slots through metamagic are treated as a spell of that level for all purposes.
Metamagic Efficiency: The high incantatrix chooses two metamagic feats she knows that have a spell slot adjustment of +4 or lower. The chosen metamagic feats now use up a spell slot one level lower than normal to a minimum of 0. This ability stacks and improves upon the incantatrix's improved metamagic class feature.
Metamagic Focus: The high incantatrix chooses one metamagic feat that she had previously chosen for her metamagic efficiency class feature. The chosen metamagic feat may now be applied to any spell or spell-like ability she knows without increasing the spell level.
Campaign Information[edit]
Playing a High Incantatrix[edit]
Combat: A High Incantatrixes roll in combat tends to revolve around suppressing enemy spellcasters and controlling the battlefield. Though they are a diverse group and many exceptions apply.
Advancement: Most High Incantatrixes's have committed themselves to their art forever and continue to progress as such for the rest of their lives.
Resources: Depending greatly on the circumstances, some incantatrixes may have great loyalty to one another due to sharing a passion for the same magic. These sorts would generally be glad to lend their aid to another. Others incantatrixes however feel a sense of rivalry with one another, competing for who can become a greater master of the arts. These types would only grant their assistance to one another in dire circumstances and any such alliance would be short term.
High Incantatrixes in the World[edit]
“ | Through the art of metamagic a spell can see it's true potential shine. | ” |
—Alice Linsyne, Half-Elf High Incantatrix |
Incantatrix Wizards may be found studying metamagic secrets around the world. Perhaps searching for tomes of spells that alter other spells, for these sorts of secrets interest them above all others.
Incantatrix Sorceresses may prefer to prove their art against others in magic duels or might join an adventuring group to help themselves improve their techniques by taking on greater challenges.
NPC Reactions: To most non-magical classes an incantatrix is no different from any other spellcaster and a high incantatrix no different from any other powerful spellcaster. To another spellcaster however their unique abilities may draw all sorts of reactions such as respect, fear or jealousy.
High Incantatrix Lore[edit]
Characters with ranks in Knowledge - Arcana can research High Incantatrixes to learn more about them. When a character makes a skill check, read or paraphrase the following, including information from lower DCs.
DC | Result |
---|---|
10 | Incantatrixes are spellcasters who specialize in metamagic. |
15 | High Incantatrixes are the most skilled incantatrixes and have mastered many secrets of metamagic. |
20 | A high incantatrix is able to cast spells using metamagic at a lower level than most spellcasters and more efficiently. Being able to utilize their metamagic to the fullest a metamagicked spell they cast would be just a deadly as a spell of it's normal level. |
25 | A high incantatrix is able to reduce the costs of their metamagic so low that they don't even require a higher level spell slot. Through this fearsome technique you may encounter spells improved with metamagic that would be impossible for a normal mage to cast. |
High Incantatrixes in the Game[edit]
Adaptation: Although originally from faerun an incantatrix or high incantatrix can easily be placed in any high magic setting. They may be part of a large organization or simply lone scholars with a fondness for spells that affect other spells and magic that thwarts extraplanar beings.
