Haibane[edit]

Nobody knows exactly what we are... if we're human or not. We call ourselves the Haibane, which means 'charcoal feathers'.

Physical Description[edit]

Haibane are virtually indistinguishable from humans at first glance. Then you notice the halo and the small pair of wings on their backs. But they are not real angels, as their wings always look dusty and grey. These wings erupt from their back with a burst of blood when they are first born. The halo, which is metallic, often emits soft gold or white light and makes the haibane look beautiful. Their wings can change tints based on the weight of their thoughts, which may result in the inability to use them. If they are very wracked with guilt and bad thoughts, their wings turn black and leaden.

History[edit]

The haibane are former humans who died and went to the Fugue Plane. At the end of their tenday stay, a baatezu would often come to hopefully bargain with them and make them into future demons. This is often repugnant to those who were good-aligned. Those who refused were offered a chance at salvation by celestial counterparts of the baatezu. They would be reborn in cocoons with a dream sequence that cryptically explained their sins and what they must let go of to purify their wings and gain the ability of flight. The souls who accepted this offer would then return to the Material Realm as a haibane to do social work and hopefully attain promised salvation.

Society[edit]

Haibane are born in high walled cities that prevent any from leaving unless they can fly. These cities are founded by the Charcoal Wings Foundation, which oversees the redemption and birth of haibane. They do not allow for the use money in the form of real currency, being considered too "pure" to handle it. They instead use slips of paper or bargain with feathers within their own societies, which they are usually bound to until they learn to fly. To any normal non-haibane, seeing a haibane is a sign of good fortune to come, and to have one live with your household is said to bring great wealth. Haibane are often instilled values of goodness and are very helpful to any society. In general, haibane are forbidden to leave their cities until their "Day of Flight," which is when their wings have developed and become pure enough so as to allow for flight. Those who learn to fly are given real money to use outside their walled shelter cities, which are like hatcheries for haibane. Once they fly over the wall and leave, they usually never look back and commit to doing good deeds for the outside world as well.
