Grey Goo
9th-level Transmutation
Casting time: 1 action
Range: Touch
Components: V, S, M (a magical item made up of at least three pounds of metal, which the spell consumes)
Duration: 1 minute

You transform a mass of magical metal, such as a weapon, shield, or similar wondrous item, into a swarm of metallic mites each no larger than a grain of sand. Each mite then begins to consume solid and liquid material around itself, turning the materials into more metal and causing the mite to grow until it doubles in size, then splits into two mites equal in size to the original before those mites repeat the cycle.

The mites move, consume, and split at extreme speeds, transforming a 10-foot radius of terrain centered on the transformed mass into a space made up of purely mites by the end of your turn, and the radius increases by an additional 10 feet at the end of each of your turns for the next minute. Each space composed of mites counts as magical difficult terrain. Any nonmagical object, structure, or plant touching the affected terrain is converted into masses of mites and absorbed into the ground.

Creatures can also be affected by this, and any creature you do not specify for the mites to avoid when you cast this spell may begin to be consumed by the mites. A creature that is in contact with an affected space at any point during its turn must make a Constitution saving throw at the end of each of its turns, and every third success is an automatic failure while the creature is in contact with a space composed of mites. A creature that fails one saving throw will have its speed and hit point maximum reduced by one third (rounded up), then reduced by another third (rounded down) on a second failed saving throw. A creature that fails three saving throws is completely consumed by the mites and dies.

After one minute, the mites stop consuming, then curl up and become inanimate metallic sand particles, which occupy all spaces the mites once occupied and no longer count as difficult terrain but may fall if the mites consumed any supporting terrain or structure.
