Gourmet Hunter Basic Techniques (5e Other)
Initial Techniques[edit]
Swift Strike[edit]
- 10 Appetite Energy
As a bonus action, you make two unarmed strikes or simple weapon attacks against a creature. At 11th level, this technique will cost 0 Appetite Energy. Finally, at 17th level, you may make three unarmed strikes or simple weapons attacks with this technique when used.
Fork[edit]
- 5 Appetite Energy
You are adept at using your hands to recreate eating utensils, such as a fork. When you make an unarmed strike, you change your unarmed strike to piercing damage and deal an additional 1d4 damage for that attack. You may also use this technique when wielding a simple weapon that already deals piercing damage. When you use this technique at 5th level, the damage increases by 1d4. The damage increases again at levels 11 and 17.
Knife[edit]
- 10 Appetite Energy
You are adept at using your hands to recreate eating utensils, such as a knife. When you make an unarmed strike, you change your unarmed strike to Slashing damage and deal an additional 1d10 damage for that attack. You may also use this technique when wielding a simple weapon that already deals slashing damage. When you use this technique at 5th level, the damage increases by 1d10. The damage increases again at levels 11 and 17.
Battle Spirit[edit]
- 10 Appetite Energy
As a bonus action, you may manifest your fighting spirit, coating you in an intimidating aura of energy, allowing you to appear more monstrous in the process. You may choose one creature within 30ft of you and cause them to make a Charisma Saving throw. On a failure, the creature will be frightened of you for one round. Additionally, if the creature fails its saving throw and is not an ooze, plant, undead, or construct, you may spend an additional 5 Appetite energy to cause them to make another saving throw at a disadvantage. On a failure, they will attempt to disengage from combat or flee as far away as possible. At 5th level, this technique can be used to target more than one creature for 5 Appetite Energy per creature. At 11th level, this technique now has a range of 60ft and now causes creatures who fail their initial saving throw to be feared of you for 1 minute, repeating the saving throw at the start of each of their turns. At 17th level, this technique now affects as many creatures as you designate within range, and if their CR is less than half (rounded up) your Gourmet Hunter level, they automatically fail their saving throw.
Pounce[edit]
- 5 Appetite Energy
As a bonus action, you may leap up to 30ft in a direction ignoring attacks of opportunity. If you end this movement within your weapon's reach of a creature, make one melee attack against a creature. Beginning at 11th level, the range of this technique increases to 60ft and grants you a +5 bonus to initiative rolls for the duration.
Prowl[edit]
- 10 Appetite Energy
For the next hour, you increase your movement speed by an amount equal to your proficiency bonus multiplied by 5. At 11th level, You no longer incur attacks of opportunity when moving away from a hostile creature so long as you are under the effects of this technique.
Eye for an Eye[edit]
- 5 Appetite Energy
As a reaction to being hit by a melee attack, you may strike back. Make one unarmed strike or simple weapon attack on the creature who attacked you. At 11th level, this technique will no longer cost any Appetite Energy. Finally, at 17th level, the retaliation attack is always made with advantage.
3rd Level Techniques[edit]
Muscle Density[edit]
Prerequisite: 3rd level
- 5 Appetite Energy
As a reaction to being hit with an attack, you may flex your muscles, reducing any incoming damage. Until the start of your next turn, increase your AC by an amount equal to your proficiency bonus.
Enhance Metabolism[edit]
Prerequisite: 3rd level
- 10+ Appetite Energy
Your gourmet cells allow you to enhance your body's natural healing capabilities by burning excessive amounts of calories. You may spend 1 Hit Die as a bonus action or an action to heal yourself for the result, plus your proficiency bonus. For every additional 10 Appetite Energy expended, you may roll another hit die as healing.
Parting Shot[edit]
Prerequisite: 3rd level
- 10 Appetite Energy
As a reaction to a creature using the disengage action, triggering an attack of opportunity from you, when a creature within your reach makes an attack against a target other than you, or uses a form of movement (such as misty step), you make a single attack against them with advantage. On a hit, the creature's movement is reduced to 0 until the end of your next turn, and if they still move out of your reach, they instead take double damage.
Crippling Strike[edit]
Prerequisite: 3rd level
- 10+ Appetite Energy
Whenever you attack a creature with an attack, you may spend Appetite Energy to cause them to make a Constitution saving throw. On a failure, they are subjected to one of the following effects until the end of your next turn: Blinded, Deafened, cannot speak, knocked prone, or has their movement speed reduced to 0. For every 5 additional Appetite Energy spent on this technique, you may inflict another effect of your choosing on the creature.
2-Hit Nail Punch[edit]
Prerequisite: 3rd level
- 15 Appetite Energy
Building Power in your arm, you unleash two rapid strikes against your target. As an action, make two unarmed attacks against a target, on a hit you deal 1d4+ Your Strength or Dexterity Modifier piercing damage to the enemy and then cause them to make a strength saving throw or be pushed back 5ft if one hit was successful and 10ft if two hits were successful. If the creature collides with another creature or a wall, they both take a number of d4s equal to half of your proficiency bonus as bludgeoning damage. Additionally, this Technique will deal double damage to all structures and constructs. When you use this technique at 5th level, the damage increases by 1d4. The damage increases again at levels 11 and 17.
Leg Fork[edit]
Prerequisite: 3rd level, Fork
- 15+ Appetite Energy
When you make an unarmed strike, you can instead use your legs for a more powerful strike. You change your unarmed strikes for the rest of your turn to piercing damage and deal additional damage as if you were using your Fork technique as a first-level Gourmet Hunter plus an additional 2 damage. If your Fork technique is used for any of your unarmed strikes while this technique is active, the technique will deal its normal damage plus another additional +2 damage. Similarly, if your Knife technique is used as a part of an unarmed strike for that round, you may choose which damage type you may use between the two; however, you will deal knife's additional damage + the additional damage (1d4+2) of the Leg Fork technique instead of your Fork's technique additional damage.
Leg Knife[edit]
Prerequisite: 3rd level, Knife
- 20+ Appetite Energy
When you make an unarmed strike, you can instead use your legs for a more powerful strike. You change your unarmed strikes for the rest of your turn to slashing damage and deal additional damage as if you were using your Knife technique as a first-level Gourmet Hunter plus an additional 2 damage. If your Knife technique is used for any of your unarmed strikes while this technique is active, the technique will deal its normal damage plus another additional +2 damage. Similarly, if your Fork technique is used as a part of an unarmed strike, you may choose which damage type you may use between the two; however, you will deal Fork's additional damage + the additional damage (1d10+2) of the Leg Fork technique instead of your Fork's technique additional damage.
5th Level Techniques[edit]
Life Erase[edit]
Prerequisite: 5th level
- 20 Appetite Energy
You erase your presence from other creatures by masking your intent allowing you to approach any creature without it sensing any hostility. For one Hour, Life Erase will grant the Gourmet Hunter a +5 bonus to Stealth checks, and they cannot be traced nor sensed by any means other than the use of magical effects or spells. The Gourmet hunter also leaves behind no tracks or traces of their passage as they keep their existence hidden. Additionally, when the gourmet hunter attacks a creature that is unaware of it while using Life Erase, that creature will take an additional number of d4s equal to the Gourmet Hunter's proficiency bonus as damage.
Projectile Deflection[edit]
Prerequisite: 5th level
- 5+ Appetite Energy
As a reaction, when you are hit by a ranged attack, you can bat the projectile away from you. You reduce the damage by an amount equal to your Gourmet Hunter level + Martial Arts die + your Dexterity modifier. If you reduce the incoming damage to 0, you can catch the projectile with a free hand or spend an additional 5 Appetite Energy to redirect it at your assailant.
When redirecting the projectile, you can make a ranged (20/60) Martial Arts attack with the projectile as part of the same reaction. You are considered proficient with this ranged weapon attack.
Lung Expansion[edit]
Prerequisite: 5th level
- 20+ Appetite Energy
The Gourmet Hunter breaths in deeply, taking in copious amounts of oxygen as their lungs expand and process oxygen at maximum efficiency. For the next hour, the Gourmet Hunter can survive without the need for air in any environment, including vacuums, as a protective layer of Appetite Energy forms around them. Additionally, the Gourmet Hunter is immune to any spells, features, or effects which need to be inhaled for the duration. For every additional 10 Appetite Energy spent, the Gourmet Hunter extends this technique's duration for an additional Hour.
Challenging Roar[edit]
Prerequisite: 5th level
- 20 Appetite Energy
As an action or bonus action, you let out a loud, taunting roar against hostile creatures within 30ft of you, attempting to goad them into a state of irrationality, focusing their attention on you. All hostile creatures must make a Charisma saving throw. On a failure, they must spend their next turn either attacking the Gourmet Hunter or using their movement to get closer to the Gourmet Hunter. On a success, creatures are not taunted by the Gourmet Hunter and act normally on their turns. A creature affected by this feature must remake the Charisma saving throw at the end of each of its turns. The Gourmet Hunter may end this effect at anytime on their turn.
Ice Pick[edit]
Prerequisite: 5th level, Fork
- 20 Appetite Energy
By placing your middle finger over your ring and index fingers, you may emulate an icepick that grants more piercing power than your Fork technique. As an action, for the next hour, this ice pick can be used to scale terrain with ease, doubling your climbing speed and allowing you to scale any terrain vertically or horizontally so long as you have a surface to anchor yourself on. You also have advantage on Strength (Athletics) checks you make to climb and advantage on any checks against displacements when anchored into a surface. If your fork technique is used while this technique is active or any derivatives of the fork technique you may increase the additional damage die size from a d4 to a d6. You may end this effect as a free action at any time during your turn.
Ferocious Bite[edit]
Prerequisite: 5th level
- 15+ Appetite Energy
Whenever you would take the attack action, you may replace a melee attack to instead perform a devastating bite when they least expect it. Make an unarmed strike against a creature that, on hit, deals 4d4 + your Strength or Dexterity piercing damage and causes the next saving throw or attack roll made by the creature to be at disadvantage. If you are engaged in a grapple against a creature, using this technique against a restrained or prone creature, you may use this technique as a bonus action instead, and it costs 5 less Appetite Energy. For every additional 5 appetite energy spent, increase the damage of this technique by 1d4 to a maximum of 10d4.
5-Hit Nail Punch[edit]
Prerequisite: 5th level, 2-Hit Nail Punch
- 20 Appetite Energy
Building Power in your arm, you unleash a flurry of straight Jabs that seemingly hit your target simultaneously, creating a number of surreal, delayed shockwaves. As an action, make five unarmed attacks against a target. On a hit, you deal d4 piercing damage to the enemy, and if at least three attacks hit, cause them to make a strength saving throw or be pushed back 15ft if the target collides a wall or collides with any creature when pushed back, the target and all creatures it collided with are stunned for one round. For every additional attack beyond three that hits the target, you push them back an additional 10ft. Additionally, this technique will deal double damage to all structures and constructs. For every additional 5 Appetite Energy expended when using this technique, add an additional 1 damage to the unarmed strikes.
8th Level Techniques[edit]
Isolation[edit]
Prerequisite: 8th level
- 10+ Appetite Energy
You perform a highspeed movement similar to breakdancing, moving one part of your body independently, leaving an afterimage, and potentially following a creature of your actual whereabouts. As a reaction to when a creature makes an attack against or imposes a saving throw against you, impose a minus to their attack roll equal to your proficiency bonus, potentially causing them to miss or lower their imposed DC for yourself by the same amount. If the creature misses you or you pass your saving throw, you can then spend an additional 5 Appetite Energy to make a contested Stealth vs Perception Check against the creature. If you win the contested check, you will be hidden from that create for one round as you seemingly disappear from their sight, creating an afterimage in the process. On a failure, the creature can still see you. This effect ends when you make a harmful action against the creature.
Intimidation Aura[edit]
Prerequisite: 8th level
- 20 Appetite Energy/5 Appetite Energy per turn
As a bonus action, you can emit a terrifying aura slowly manifesting into your inner Appetite Demon. All enemies within 30ft of you who can see you must make a Charisma saving throw or be frightened. At the start of each of their turns, creatures affected by your initial manifestation will make another charisma saving throw, and on a success, they will no longer be frightened. Additionally, you create an intensified version of the aura within 5ft of you, which causes creatures within to make the save at disadvantage. Creatures within this intensified version of the aura that are frightened will have their movement reduced to 0. Creatures feared by intimidation aura will also take bonus additional damage equal to your proficiency bonus, and you have advantage on attacks against creatures frightened by this technique.
Alternatively, you may use your bonus action to try to instill fear against a creature that is not frightened within your aura, causing them to make a Charisma saving throw or be frightened. Your intensified Aura cannot affect creatures bigger than the huge size. Finally, you must spend Appetite energy at the start of each turn to continue sustaining the aura, and the gourmet hunter counts as concentrating while emitting it.
Unseen Predators[edit]
Prerequisite: 8th level, Life Erase technique
- 30 Appetite Energy
The silent aura exuded from your life-erase technique extends out to coat your allies, almost as if erasing all of you from existence. As a bonus action, for the next hour, you may grant yourself and one other ally of your choosing the benefits of your Life Erase technique. For every additional 5 Appetite Energy expended when you use this technique, you may target one additional ally of your choice.
Flying Fork[edit]
Prerequisite: 8th level, Fork
- 10 Appetite Energy
After much training, you have learned how to subconsciously release Appetite Energy in the form of a fork at enemies. Whenever you make an unarmed strike, you can instead make a ranged attack on a creature of your choice. These attacks will have a range equal to 20 times your proficiency bonus. On a hit, the creature will take additional damage as if your Fork technique was used. This technique will function independently of Leg Fork or Leg Knife when used. After spending the appetite energy for this technique, until the end of that turn, any unarmed strikes you make may be converted into ranged attacks.
Flying Knife[edit]
Prerequisite: 8th level, Knife
- 15 Appetite Energy
After much training, you have learned how to subconsciously release Appetite Energy in the form of a knife at enemies. Whenever you make an unarmed strike, you can instead make a ranged attack on a creature of your choice. These attacks will have a range equal to 20 times your proficiency bonus. On a hit, the creature will take additional damage as if your Knife technique was used. This technique will function independently of the Leg Fork and Knife Techniques. After spending the appetite energy for this technique, until the end of that turn, any unarmed strikes you make may be converted into ranged attacks.
10+ hit Nail Gun[edit]
Prerequisite: 8th level, 5-Hit Nail Punch
- 30+ Appetite Energy
Building Power in your arm, you unleash a single straight Jab that impacts your target as if they had been hit with a barrage of attacks, creating a number of surreal, delayed shockwaves. As an action, make an unarmed attack against a target. On a hit, you deal 10d4 + Your Strength modifier piercing damage to the enemy and cause them to make a strength saving throw or be pushed back 30ft. If the target collides with a wall, they are stunned for one round. If they collide with another creature, that creature will make a Dexterity saving throw or take half damage on a failed Dexterity saving throw and be pushed back along with the original creature. Additionally, this technique will deal double damage to all structures and constructs, and for an additional 10 Appetite Energy, this technique can be used at a range up to 30ft. For every additional 5 Appetite Energy used, this technique will gain an additional 2d4 damage as you add another nail to the barrage of attacks.
Nemesis[edit]
Prerequisite: 8th level
- 40 Appetite Energy
Every hunter has one creature that is considered their greatest hunt. You've taken this concept and can weaponize it to fuel you to greater heights. You may select one creature within sight of you as an action and designate them as your nemesis. While a creature is marked as your nemesis, you have advantage on any checks involving survival, investigation, perception, and insight against or in relation to them. Additionally, all of their attacks will be made at disadvantage towards you, their attacks cannot have advantage against you, and once per turn, whenever you successfully hit them, they will take additional damage to them equal to your unarmed die. Once you mark a creature as your nemesis, they remain your nemesis until they are killed, have their hit points reduced to 0, or reduces you to 0 hit points. You may only have one nemesis at any given time.
11th Level Techniques[edit]
Hunting Party[edit]
Prerequisite: 11th level, Prowl Technique
- 40+ Appetite Energy
You let out an invigorating battle cry to your allies, signaling the beginning of the hunt. For the next hour, up to 4 other creatures gain the benefits of the prowl technique, and when you or one of those allies are within 5ft of a hostile creature, you all gain the benefits of pack tactics. For every additional 10 Appetite Energy, you may grant these effects to one additional creature.
Leg Nail Kick[edit]
Prerequisite: 11th level, 5-Hit Nail Punch
- 30+ Appetite Energy
Using the same principles of the Nail Punch, the Gourmet Hunter makes one devastating kick. Make a melee attack against a creature, on a hit they take 8d8 + Your Strength Modifier Piercing damage and must make a Strength Strength saving throw against your DC. On a failure, they are knocked back 5 times your proficiency bonus away from you and are knocked prone. Any creature or structure they collide with will take (Your proficiency bonus)d4 bludgeoning damage and stops them in their tracks. This technique does double damage to constructs and structures, and for an additional 10 Appetite Energy this technique can be used at a range up to 15ft. When you use this technique at 13th level, the damage increases by 2d8. The damage increases again at level 17.
Fork Shield[edit]
Prerequisite: 11th level, Fork
- 30+ Appetite Energy
Using your Fork technique, you make an arc surrounding yourself. As a reaction, you create your fork shield, granting +5 to your AC and granting the benefits of half cover to any creature adjacent to you until the start of your next turn. You may spend 10 Appetite Energy at the start of each round to maintain this technique.
Multi Fork Shield[edit]
Prerequisite: 11th level, Fork Shield, 2-Hit Nail Punch
- 30+ Appetite Energy
Combining the properties of your fork shield with your nail punch, you form a multilayer personal shield protecting you from harm. As a reaction, you create a layer of forks around yourself that have hit points equal to 5d6 + twice your Wisdom modifier (minimum 2). If you would take damage, the forks block and takes that damage instead. The forks cannot block psychic damage unless it is dealt by a melee attack. If the forks are reduced to 0 hit points, you take any remaining damage and the technique ends. At the end of your next turn, the technique ends. For every additional 5 appetite, Energy spent, increase the hit points of your forks by 1d6.
Slice and Dice[edit]
Prerequisite: 11th level, Knife
- 30 Appetite Energy
Your mastery of Knife has allowed you to achieve a state of heightened precision, allowing you to maintain the technique and continuously cut through scores of enemies. As a bonus action, you clang your hands together, sharpening your blades and allowing your unarmed strikes to constantly gain the benefits of the knife technique on hit and cause all adjacent creatures of your primary target to take damage equal to half of the damage dealt by your unarmed strikes. Additionally, if you were to reduce a creature to 0 while using this technique, any excess damage can be carried over to any hostile adjacent creature to the creature you reduced to 0 hit points. While using this technique, you will be considered concentrating, and you can spend 10 appetite energy when forced to make a concentration check to immediately pass instead.
Viscous Bite[edit]
Prerequisite: 11th level, Ferocious Bite
- 50 Appetite Energy
Some creatures regenerate better than others, but a good hunter knows exactly how to rub salt in the wound. After making a successful attack against a creature using the attack action, you may make an additional bite attack against them. On a hit, this technique deals 8d4 + your Strength or Dexterity piercing damage. For the next minute, the creature suffers from a festering wound, preventing it from receiving any non-magical healing. If you are engaged in a grapple against the creature, using this technique against a restrained or prone creature, this technique costs 20 less Appetite Energy.
Unyielding Ferocity[edit]
Prerequisite: 11th level, Challenging Roar
- 30 Appetite Energy
Utilizing your appetite energy, you channel your inner predator and let out a ferocious roar, filling you with tenacity. As a reaction, whenever you are grappled, restrained, have your movement speed reduced to 0, knocked prone, or knocked back, you may let out a shout of defiance, allowing you to break free of your restraints, cleansing, preventing, or removing any of the previously stated effects. Additionally, for 10 additional appetite Energy, you can extend the effects of this cleanse to remove the following negative conditions from yourself: Charmed, Frightened, Incapacitated, paralyzed, petrified, and Stunned.
14th Level Techniques[edit]
Cannon Fork[edit]
Prerequisite: 14th level, Fork
- 40 Appetite Energy
Your mastery of Fork alongside Food Meditation has allowed you to send a hail of Forks at a location, piercing and pinning any in its wake. Choose a point within 60ft of you and make all creatures within a 15ft radius make a Strength saving throw. On a failure, they take 12d4 + your Strength or Dexterity Modifier Piercing damage and are restrained until the end of your next turn as the barrage of forks pins them in place. On a success, they only take half damage and have their movement speed halved.
Aggressive Adaptation[edit]
Prerequisite: 14th level
- 30 Appetite Energy
When enduring overwhelming opposition, Gourmet Hunters must often adapt or die. As a reaction to a creature scoring a critical hit or dealing 20 or more damage in a singular instance or during their turn against the Gourmet Hunter, they may force their Gourmet Cells to rapidly adapt, granting them resistance to the triggering damage type until the end of the combat encounter. Additionally, until the end of the Gourmet Hunter's next turn, they also gain 5 damage reduction to all damage and treat critical hits as normal hits. This damage reduction applies after any resistances they may possess.
Cheat Death[edit]
Prerequisite: 14th level
- 30 Appetite Energy
This technique is considered a passive technique and if chosen, will subtract it's required appetite energy cost from your maximum leaving you with the remaining amount at the start of each long rest.
