Flexible Ability Score Increase (5e Variant Rule)

From D&D Wiki

Jump to: navigation, search

While most folks fall into the typical expectations of their race, player-characters are anything but typical.

When you apply the Ability Score Increase trait from your race and subrace, you can apply the increase to any ability score of your choice. If you have multiple Ability Score Increases, each must be applied to a different ability score.

Example: Instead of a dragonborn having +2 Strength and +1 Charisma, your dragonborn might have +2 Dexterity and +1 Constitution. You couldn't however have something like +3 Dexterity, or +1 to three different ability scores.

Alternatively, you can completely forgo the Ability Score Increase provided by your race (and subrace) to instead gain a feat of your choice at 1st level. You can't gain this benefit if your race already provides a free feat. You can't gain this benefit if your race your doesn't normally provide an ASI of either +2/+1 or +1/+1/+1.
