Face[edit]

"Michael?"

The man named Michael turned. Gregory squinted. The man could have been an elf, or he could have been a human. For all he knew the man could have been an orc.

"You requested a meeting with me." Even the voice was unaffected, so that Gregory would never have been able to identify him later.

"Yes. I need some help..." The word left a foul taste in the paladin's mouth, but desperate times...

"You need something stolen"

"How do you know that?"

'The man seemed to slide right past him, and before Gregory knew what was happening, Michael stood at the entrance of the alleyway. "I have my ways. Meet me at the Winding path Inn, in a week, and I will have your item."

Then he was gone. Somehow, Gregory wasn't sure whether to be assured, or worried.

"Do you have it?"

Michel stood on the edge of a clearing, as a tiny pixe walked out to meet him. It dragged behind it a heavy wand, which seemed to curse as she carried it.

"Ah thank you, Kplllrr. That's three favors you own me now."

A face is everyone. Well, that's not actually true, but it could be true enough. A face knows everyone, and hoards favors over gold. He can be the most conspicuous person in a room, or he can be an anyone. A face is useful alone, for information gathering and generally being a sneaky bugger, but their true power comes when they call in their favors, and bring to bear some very powerful friends.

Class Features[edit]

All the following are class features of the face:

Social Butterfly: A face is at home among other people, and knows people no matter where he goes. He gains a bonus equal to his level when performing diplomacy, bluff, intimidate, gather information, and performance rolls.

Social Chamelion: A face can be as they wish to be. They can fit perfectly in slums, palaces, even temples, never appearing out of place. A face never receives any negitive modifiers for wearing inappropriate clothing (peasants clothes at a baquet, the like.) In addition, around a face, people do not keep themselves as guarded. She can perform a gather information check at any time she is near a group of people, by simply falling into step with them and listening.

Create Contract(Favor): Anyone can Owe a favor, but a face takes it one step further. They create, by means of simple rituals, a binding contract of a favor. These contracts appear magically whenever someone becomes indebted to a face, although most of them never show the contract to the person bound by them. The contract is techinically worthless, and is printed on cheap paper. If the contract is destroyed without being fufilled, another will magically appear. Any time a face is attempting to convince a person to help him, they can add +4 to their diplomacy, bluff, or intimidation rolls. If the favor was created by a face doing something important (Saving a life, usually), he adds an additional +2 to the bonus.

Hide in Plain Sight: A face can use the Hide skill even while being observed. As long as she is within 10 feet of some sort of shadow, a face can hide herself from view in the open without anything to actually hide behind. She cannot, however, hide in her own shadow.

Compel favors: A face, after a certain amount of time, can compel someone to perform a favor for him by offering something of equal value. Usually the payment is a favor owed to the person, since faces are bound by any favor they make. Any roll they make attempting to convince someone to do something may be taken as though a face has a contract in hand

(In)conspicuous: If a face does not want to be identified, she does not have to be. When using the Inconspicuous ability, anyone attempting to identify a face takes a detriment equal to her level, as though she were disguised. Magical attempts to determine her identity take the same detriment. When using the disguise feat, add the character's level to the results. In contrast, a face using the Conspicuous ability can be automatically identified out of a crowd.

Wear Faces: After a long enough time, a face has spent so much effort in creating false lives that they can take on the 'face' of another, fake, person. A face can, using their disguise skill, take on a second persona, including voice and mannerisms. This disguise is so intigrated into her mind that any magical attempts to determine a face's real identity will come up negitive; when in disguise, the face is exactly who she says she is.

Contact Acquaintances: This ability allows a face to contact anyone who he currently has a contract with, regardless of distance. The ability does not grant any ability to summon the person in question, but he can contact them, as though they were in the same room.

Command Payment: A face of a certain level can demand a favor from anyone who they have a contract with, requiring them to carry it out. Use of this ability requires that a face show the contract to the person in question, so it cannot be done over distance.

DM notes[edit]

My old DM originally got the idea for this class from Shadowrun, where there was a type of characters that were informally named 'faces'. Faces had friends everywhere, and while they were rarely the strongest characters or the most mystical, they could always find someone who was.
