Fēnglì de xīyì rén (FEN-GLEE DEH ZEE-YEE REN) are a tall, sleek, and bony reptilian race of island folk. Fēnglì de xīyì rén do not have mouths, per say, but gill-like orifices between the cheek bones. Normal air is toxic to fēnglì de xīyì rén, so they need these gills to breathe in the oxygen without the other elements getting into their system. Fēnglì de xīyì rén have four arms and two legs. Their hands only have three fingers, and the larger, upper arms have spine protruding from the third finger, which helps them move their hands through water in order to swim and hunt under water more effectively. The tail of a fēnglì de xīyì rén acts as a fifth appendage, which can be used as a weapon or a tool. Males have a large crest that goes across their shoulders, which is primarily used to attract mates and assert dominance. The Male with more lines within his crest is the strongest. Fēnglì de xīyì rén have very strong legs, allowing them to jump, run, and swim at greater speeds than most. The three claws on their feet are placed in such a way that allows superior grip on rocks, and can even allow them to walk along walls of 65 degrees or less. The colors of fēnglì de xīyì rén varies greatly, and almost any color scales can be found with up to three combinations on one.
History[edit]
The fēnglì de xīyì rén are thought by many to be one the first intelligent races of the current era. The fēnglì de xīyì rén once lived along the coasts of the primary continents, but were driven away by early humans, elves, and dwarves, fleeing to untouched islands. Fēnglì de xīyì rén have begun to leave their home islands to explore the main land, but most prefer staying with their tribe. The elders of the tribes pass down the history of their species to their young ones, these stories ranging from battles to exploration among other ways the tribes come to be. The fēnglì de xīyì rén are capable of greater war tactics and power, but do not wish to have their tribes be torn apart through war, thus they usually remain neutral during great times of conflict.
Society[edit]
The fēnglì de xīyì rén are tribal island dwellers, and are considered to be an almost perfect species by neighboring societies. Tribes of fēnglì de xīyì rén live in huts made of whale skins and bones along the coasts of islands. Both the tribe females and males hunt fish and aquatic mammals during the day, and the guard the island from invaders at night, as well as hunt the terrestrial species on the island.
The fēnglì de xīyì rén tribes are each led by an Alpha, a Beta, and an Omega that is the sibling to either the Alpha or Beta, and is their respective surrogate. On the birth date of every Alpha, they will engage in combat over a rocky cliff with contenders who wish to become the new Alpha. If the current Alpha is tossed into the water or knocked unconscious, they are dethroned. Killing the Alpha, however leads to exile. If no Alpha and Omega are present in the tribe, the tribe will have no choice but to disband.
The fēnglì de xīyì rén are omnivores, eating almost anything that they find in the ocean or on the shores. This includes various tropical fruit, fish, turtles, mammals, and sea weed. The tools used by the fēnglì de xīyì rén are made of coral, stone, wood, and bone. Most fēnglì de xīyì rén hunt with spears and long bows, but some use sub-par variations of longswords, axes, and sometimes even crossbows. Due to their extreme hunting skills, the other races of the main land trade with the fēnglì de xīyì rén the rare fish and sunken treasures found beneath the sea that many of the other races are unable to acquire.
The fēnglì de xīyì rén are also fond of the arts, including music and painting. Fēnglì de xīyì rén musical instruments consist of pan flutes of bone, ukuleles of native wood, and bongo drums of shark skin. The fēnglì de xīyì rén paint with paste made from coral and shells, marking the symbol of their tribe or any other design they desire, such as the sun and moon, on the rocks facing out towards the water.
The Elves and Humans are fond of the fēnglì de xīyì rén, and vice versa. However, many of the Dwarven clans are against having island hunters do much of the dirty work that they can do themselves. This self-confidence is known by fēnglì de xīyì rén, who are willing to help out the Dwarfs reclaim sunken treasure. The fēnglì de xīyì rén are not particularly fond of minted coin, and more often than not trade with gemstones as a standard. However, the very finest stones are used as embellishment on their weapons and armors.
