Erradiagos[edit]

They get on my nerves. Jumpy, second-guessing nervous wrecks, the lot of 'em. I mean, if you want the best map possible for cheap they're worth the trouble, but they're scared of literally everything.
—Vuncar, Azer Knight of Sunstone

Physical Description[edit]

The erradiagos are monstrous beasts that are fearsome in appearance. Their heads are flat, almond-shaped forms with a split down the middle; the bottom part of which is the mouth which reveals rows of teeth. Erradiago bodies are thin and lanky, but covered in 3-5 inch thick chitin, though the resistance this natural armor gives is the same regardless of amount. The chitin is dark and glossy, resembling water in the dark. Their arms and legs are similar to that of lizardfolk with four clawed toes and six-fingered hands, all tipped with sharp chitin. Erradiagos have two tails, each 2-3 feet in length. They connect before attaching to the body, making a hoop-like appendage.

The eyes are the erradiagos' best asset. There are six of them. The two main eyes are front-most on either side of the mouth and are similar to a humans. The second pair are small dots above the main set and are used to provide darkvision. The last set are slits near the edge of their faces that are extensively sensitive, known to be a weak point. They rest under a thicker lining of chitin than their other eyes as these emit light. This makes them a liability when hunting at night, as that only serves to give away their location. Due to their aberrant appearance, erradiagos are believed to be related to creatures of the abyss.

History[edit]

Erradiagos live in super-sheltered, secluded places. According to their lore, the race descended from that of a former great warrior, who boasted of his greatness and handsomeness, rebuking even the gods as inferior. Enraged, the deities punished him by striking him with debilitating lightning. His form morphed and lost its vitality, becoming spindly and undesirable to all eyes. If that wasn't bad enough, all his courage was also sapped, leaving him a broken shell of his former self. His offspring were cursed to bear all his features as well, making the erradiagos basically ugly cowards for life. Due to the bestowed cowardice, neither the ancestor nor his descendants could ever stand up to try and get vengeance on the gods who cursed them to this fate. They can only scheme as they lived in fear and paranoia within their small societies.

Society[edit]

Erradiagos live in small, sheltered and secluded communities, often built into dark cave systems or tunnels. In these enclosures, they farm lichens to eat, as well as harvest small crustaceans and fish which live in bodies of water in the caves. Some erradiagos are known to live in the Underdark, but far away from any other civilizations. Sometimes they may be raided by drows or illythids to be enslaved, which is when they become defensively vehement. Like quaggoths, they are not edible to mindflayers. Their cowardice makes them very bad guards in general.

They are extremely suspicious and fearful of outsiders, making them quite the xenophobic society. No known trade is conducted with them, and many would be horrified at first sight. It is believed many erradiagos exhibit such introvert behavior because there is an innate sense of inferiority or self-consciousness of their appearance for others. Erradiagos have been hunted as monsters before in history, so it is probable.

Erradiagos Names[edit]

Erradiagos are named at birth, but they have no surnames. Since the adoption of Common, Aquan, and Terran languages, these names are a mix of Elven and Dwarven syllables. They're also unisex.
