Environmental Spell Component (5e Variant Rule)
From D&D Wiki
Environmental Spell Component[edit]
A spell with an Environmental component (abbreviated as "E") requires it to be cast while a specific condition in the environment is met. A condition can be something like the physical locale such as casting the spell while in a desert or in a temple to a specific god, something more time oriented like casting the spell during a new moon or solar eclipse, or a combination of the two.
Spells that require an environmental component are inherently a little unbalanced. Being restricted to certain conditions limits their uses, but allows them to be stronger as a result. However, that is not the only factor that renders them unbalanced: environmental components can also be highly campaign-dependent, for example requiring an even more esoteric casting condition like the last light of a specific calendar day, the alignment of specific celestial bodies in the sky, or being in a specific region in the world.
