Dragoon[edit]
“ | Wake up! Dragoon of the Red-Eye Dragon! | ” |
—Rose, Human Warlock/Dragoon, Legend of Dragoon for PS1 |
This prestige class harnesses the power of the one and only dragon. A dragoon's ring is a crystalized essence.
Becoming a Dragoon[edit]
The Dragoon offers unique abilities similar to that of a dragon. This is more a rewarded prestige class for those that manage to gain the correct item.

Class Features[edit]
Dragoons gain features involving their jumping ability, improvement on their weapon, and its own spellcasting ability.
Dragon Essence: Various aspects are dictated by the dragon's essence that is obtained.
Dragon Color | Element |
---|---|
Black | Shadow |
Blue | Water |
Green | Acid |
Red | Burning |
White | Cold |
Dragoon Transformation (Sp): A Dragoon is capable of a transformation as a free action which has a few notable benefits:
The Dragoon's Weapon does damage as if it were one size category larger (This does not stack with Size Increase at 9th level), the weapon is treated as a weapon of the Dragoon's element for calculating damage. A Dragoon's Armor transforms into (Color) Dragoon Armor (Where Color is the dragon's color listed above, color does change at 5th level). The Armor's 'metal' plating is simply magical energies fused to the armor, functioning as if 'Mage Armor' were cast on the character (Meaning the actual spell does not stack). A pair of wings manifest on the back of the armor. They are shaped similar to a dragon's which allows them to fly at half their base land speed with Good maneuverability. Effectively this functions as the 'Fly' Spell. Spells cast in this form that match the element of the Dragoon type are treated as cast at 1 caster level higher, while any other element is treated as cast 1 caster level lower.
The Dragoon maintains the form for 1 round/Dragoon Level (Max 10 rounds). This ability can be used 1/day. An additional use per day is gained every 3 levels after 1st.
Natural Jumper (Ex): A Dragoon is very capable of jumping. They can take 10 even if threatened or rushed, they also do not take penalties for not taking a running start. In fact, a running start conifers a +2 Circumstance bonus (Increases to +5 at 4th level).
Sphere(Sp): Each Dragoon gains a specific Sphere at 2nd level. This sphere increases as per the normal of Spheres Rules at 6th and 10th levels. Use character level (total character level, not Dragoon level) for reference to what spells are available.
Black: Death Sphere
Blue: Bubbles Sphere (All element types being Water instead in the given entry)
Green: Venom Sphere
Red: Pyre Sphere
White: Cold Sphere
During Epic Levels, any sphere not already listed above is allowed to be chosen for a sphere to take at 13th level. At level 16 the access of this second sphere is improved. Finally at level 19, the same sphere is improved once more.
Enhanced Weapon (Su): At 3rd level. The weapon a Dragoon Wields in base form is treated as if it were made of Adamantine. At 6th level, the weapon is treated as if it were the element that the Dragoon wields. At 9th level, the weapon does damage as if it were 1 size category larger (This does not stack with the same feature as indicated during Dragoon Transformation).
Double Jump (Su): A Dragoon is so nimble and able to jump that at 4th level, a Dragoon can jump a second time in mid air. The player must designate if this is a straight up jump or a forward jump when used. This second jump has no penalties associated with the check. At the expense of being able to double jump at the time of jumping, they may instead simply take 20 on a jump check if a single jump would suffice. The Check difficulty cannot be in the ranks of an Epic difficulty Jump check.
Essence Purification: The 5 Base Essences at 5th level 'Purify' into their Metallic counterparts and they gain a few additional benefits.
The Dragon type evolves according to the chart below and gains the New Element alongside the old element.
Chromatic | Metallic | New Element |
---|---|---|
Black | Brass | Electricity |
Blue | Bronze | Ice |
Green | Copper | Nature |
Red | Gold | Pyre |
White | Silver | Positive Energy |
Flight in Dragoon form improves to full base land speed and perfect maneuverability. Casting spells in Dragoon form no longer incurs caster level penalties if it is not of the associated elements of the dragoon armor type.
The Epic level Spheres are to the player's choice.
Epic Dragoon[edit]
Level | Special |
---|---|
11th | |
12th | Tripple Jump |
13th | Sphere |
14th | |
15th | Immortality |
16th | Sphere |
17th | |
18th | Summon Dragon |
19th | Sphere |
20th | Destiny |
The epic Dragoon gains a bonus feat every 5 levels after 10 (Any/all Feats qualified for, including epic feats).
Tripple Jump (Ex): An Epic Dragoon further learns to better his jumping ability. At 12th level, the Dragoon learns to jump a third time in midair. Or can take 20 on a Double Jump attempt. The attempt must not rank Epic check. A single jump can be a natural 20 for an Epic check.
Immortality (Su): An Epic Dragoon at 15th level stops aging altogether and is not able to die of old age.
Summon Dragon (Sp): An Epic Dragoon learns to call upon their spirit's essence. 1/day an Epic Dragoon can summon a Dragon of a CR up to the character's level - 2. The Dragon fights for the Epic Dragoon to the best of their ability.
Destiny (Su): The Epic Dragoon has reached its final destiny. 1/Year a Dragoon can use this special power to alter a pivotal event occurring in the present.
"You are free to sever the chains of fate that bind you." -Legend of Dragoon intro
Ex-Dragoon[edit]
Should a dragoon lose their dragoon ring, they will temporarily lose access to the Dragoon transformation and spheres and cannot take levels in this prestige class until it is regained. Should another person become the wielder of the dragoon ring and its powers, the loss of the Dragoon transformation is semi-permanent and the character can no longer take levels in this Prestige class. A character temporarily loses the Dragoon transformation if he/she dies. The form is reinstated if either resurrected or becomes Undead.
Campaign Information[edit]
Playing a Dragoon[edit]
Combat: Typical to a Warrior or Warmage (Complete Arcane)
Advancement: Most Dragoons would Chain Prestige Class into other Dragon or Dragoon themed Class/Prestige classes.
Resources: Other Dragoons are scarce to be found, but are also somewhat revered. As such, Dragoons find not too much difficulty in forming their own reservoir of resources.
Dragoons in the World[edit]
Dragoons are notable adventuring parties who have done something ranking with slaying a dragon of notable size/age. Others are simply heirs to such a power. Though they are somewhat rare in the world.
NPC Reactions: NPCs would not really recognize a Dragoon until they transform right in the middle of battle. Such a transformation is intimidating and even a bit awe inspiring. Otherwise they are seen as their base class would be seen.
Dragoon Lore[edit]
Characters with ranks in Knowledge(History) can research Dragoons to learn more about them. When a character makes a skill check, read or paraphrase the following, including information from lower DCs.
DC | Result |
---|---|
11 | A Dragoon's jumping is almost supernatural in nature. |
16 | A Dragoon's power is drawn from the crystallized essence of a dragon. |
21 | A particular dragoon, last known whereabouts, and last known notable deed. |
26 | Powerful Dragoons are capable of severing the shackles of fate of an entire world and changing the course of the world. |
Dragoons in the Game[edit]
Likely, Dragoons are going to be party members if they even find out about one another.
Adaptation: Any Campaigns with Dragons and Spellcasters of any nature would be capable of becoming a Dragoon.
