Detect Thoughts (4e Ritual)
From D&D Wiki
You close your eyes and concentrate, psychically listening for the presence of minds nearby.
|Level:||4||Component Cost:||25 gp|
|Category:||Divination||Market Price:||175 gp|
|Time:||1 minute||Key Skill:||Arcana|
|Duration:||1 round (sustain no-action)|
You detect the existence of thinking minds within the area of your ritual. After performing the ritual, the area starts as a 5' (1 square) radius, and increases 1 square per round until it reaches the maximum radius for your Arcana check (see table). For the duration of the ritual you are considered stunned, blinded, and helpless, but you may end the duration as a no-action at any time.
You immediately know the exact location of any creature with an intelligence score of 3 or higher within the area, and can see them as if you had Blindsight (you no longer suffer total concealment against these creatures, but are still otherwise effected by the blinded condition). If any creature with an intelligence score of 21 or higher is within the area the ritual immediately ends before learning this creature's location, and you are still stunned and blinded (save ends). If the creature has an intelligence score of 26 or higher, you also lose a healing surge; if you have no remaining healing surges, you instead take damage equal to your surge value.
As a no-action, you may try to hear the surface thoughts of any creature within the area for one round. To do so, make an Arcana check with a DC equal to the target's will defense. If you fail the DC by 5, the target is aware that you attempted to listen to their thoughts, otherwise the target is unaware of the attempt. If you have "Language of the Mind" as a known language you automatically understand the thoughts you hear, otherwise you must speak the language of your target. Animals and creatures without a language have simple, instinctual thoughts that you can pick up in this way.
|Arcana Check||Maximum Area|
|9 or lower||30 feet (6 squares)|
|10-19||60 feet (12 squares)|
|20-29||120 feet (24 squares)|
|30-39||240 feet (48 squares)|
|40 or higher||500 feet (100 squares)|
Ritual Scroll: You can perform this ritual as a standard action when you do so from a scroll. If you do, you take a -5 penalty to your Arcana check(s), but you are not stunned or helpless for the duration (you are still blinded). The duration changes to 1 round (sustain minor) instead of 1 round (sustain no-action).
