"Madmen and clerics babble of a time when people would turn to demons only in times of desparation. If such a time ever existed, it was an era of fools, for anyone who has seen the power demons offer would know their choice."-Narcasius the Black

On the world of Cinderstar, demons rule over the material plane. Many of them are willing to forge pacts with humans, however, as there are still areas they do not have power over. By way of pacts, they can gain leverage where they had none before. Others will grant pacts simply to see mortals suffer. The working of these "Pacts of Pain" as they are called, are so subtle, one could atribute the ill effects to chance, or simply ont notice them for most of their life.

Sample Pacts[edit]

Although you are encounrged to make your own pacts up for the players, these are some sample pacts you can use to torment your players, or make them stronger, as well as some demons who might offer them.

Abbadon[edit]

Abbadon resembles a towering eight foot tall human at a first look. However, the more you look at it, the more strange features appear. Its eyes are entirely black, its hands are incredibly long, and each hand ends in long sharpened claws. It has a strange sigil on its finger, as do all its followers and those who have made pacts with it. Abbadon has no clear indication of its gender. It is also one of the most powerful demons on the material plane, and runs a massive organization that essentially controls all of the great city. It is straightforward and polite in conversation, and always well dressed. In terms of pacts, they are usually straightforward, granting a single specific blessing in exchange of a single item, favor, or sacrifice. Two are shown below:

  • Wish Pact
Prerequisites: none. In exchange for a specific request, usually something major like the souls of multiple beings, or a pledge of service, you receive a single wish spell, although Abbadon will always require you to tell it the wish in advance. You cannot wish for anything other than what you said you would.
  • Pact of Abbadon
Prerequisites: Intelegnece score of 13. At different pact levels you gain different abilities. At pact level one, you gain plus your strength score and become six inches taller. At pact level two you gain advantage on intimidation and persuasion checks. At pact level five, you gain inky black eyes and darkvision out to 120 feet in dim light and 60 feet and can cast the eyebyte cantrip. At pact level seven you gain plus one to all ability scores, and become one foot taller. You may be entrusted with up to 6 cultists to serve you and do your bidding.

Yeenoghu[edit]

This demon prowls the line between the city and the wilderness. Rarely seen in the city due to its hatred of civilized behavior, Yeenoghu instead torments people with maddening visions to convince them to seek it out and make pacts. Other times, it finds the insane and claims their loyalty. More often than not, it travels in the form of a gust of wind accompanied by a foul scent reminiscent of blood and rotten flesh. When it manifests physically, it appears as an enormous, bloated boar or hyena that bursts open to reveal a massive humanoid hyena, accompanied by several Gnolls. In terms of pacts, Yeenoghu has little to ask, except that the cultist spreads madness, terror, and bloodshed. Its cultists are feared by all outside the city and most within it.

  • Savagery Pact
You gain plus one to your strength and constitution scores, and can attack as a bonus action until next dawn, but if you fail to kill a sentient creature by dawn the next day, you take 4d10 necrotic damage. Death from this effect causes your soul to be claimed by Yeenoghu.
  • Pact of Yeenoghu
Prerequisites: 13 constitution. You are inducted into the cult of Yeenoghu. At pact level one, you can call upon a mixture of 1d4 minor friends, consisting of Quaists, Gargoyles and Imps at the start of an adventure. At pact level two, You gain a devouring bloodlust that lets you add your pact level to the damage of your attacks. At pact level three, you can call upon 2 Gnolls at the start of a quest. At pact level Five, you can devour a creature to gain 1d4 hit points for each size class. This takes one minute of each size class. Huge and larger creatures cannot be devoured in this way. At pact level five, you may attack as a bonus action on your turn. You must kill a creature once every two days, or Yeenoghu claims your soul.

Graz'zt[edit]

Graz'zt is a tall, handsome, humanoid who, in his true form, has dark purple skin and black hair, as well as large horns. He always takes the form of a man, although he can shape shift. Muscular but lithe, Graz'zt is almost always accompanied by one or more sccubi or incubi. He is mercurial in disposition and seldom actually returns favors. Graz'zt is known to seduce humans rather than form pacts with them. Occasionally however, someone catches his interest and he deems them worthy of a blessing. His fickle nature makes any pacts with him unstable.

  • Summoning Pact
In exchange for a favor, such as a sacrifice or the collection of a soul or two, Graz'zt may grant the dealer the service of 1d4 plus the character's charisma modifier demons to do their bidding (Lemures, Dretches, and Manes). they disappear after a number of days equal to the character's charisma score.
  • Pact of Graz'zt
In exchange for a major favor, such as a pledge of service, you can gain certain features. At pact level one, you get plus one to your charisma score. At pact level two, you gain immunity to the charmed condition except from fiends. At pact level tree, you gain advantage on charisma checks. At pact level five, you gain the service of a sccubus or inccubus that can be called upon 3 times daily.
