Physical Description[edit]
Darkners appear in a variety of shapes and sizes, comprised of a dark energy bound to a physical object; which is sustained and manifested by a magnificently named Dark Fountain that gives them form. Depending upon the object they were initially formed from, a Darkner's appearance is mirrored and themed around it. For example, a playing card exposed to the Fountain may create a Darkner based upon the pattern drawn into the card itself; one themed around the Prince of Hearts may take on a humanoid shape, with green colorations and appropriate stylings granting the Darkner a small, yet regal appearance. However, due to the overall chaotic nature of a Darkner forming it all depends on the object a Darkner was formed from.
History[edit]
Darkners and their worlds came about through the creation of Dark Fountains. Their Dark Worlds being a counterpart of the true world, or the Light World. These Dark Fountains were created by Lightners who eventually lived in harmony with the Darkners until they disappeared without a trace. After, the Darkners were no longer able to traverse the Light World. Those who remember the Lightners believe they had abandoned them and sealed them away without purpose.
Society[edit]
Most Darkners live in strange places known as Dark Worlds, which are opened by the aforementioned Dark Fountains. Each Dark World is different and composed of many different Darkners, which reflect where in the world the fountains were opened. Some who remember the Lightners believe them to be enemies and will struggle to trust them if ever they do meet a Lightner. Though this isn't true of all Darkners. Darkners can only inhabit the Dark World from which they originate for extended periods of time. If Darkners do visit another Dark World, they turn to stone after remaining in it for too long, although they make a full recovery when returned to a compatible Dark World.

Darkner Traits[edit]
Whimsical beings of darkness given life by mystical Fountains of energy.
Ability Score Increase. Your Charisma score increases by 1.
Age. Darkners age fairly slowly compared to Humans, reaching physical maturity at around 28. However, unlike other races, Darkners live off of particularly potent sources of energy and are effectively ageless for as long as those sources remain flowing.
Alignment. Most Darkners are typically of a Good or Neutral alignment, however, it isn't unheard of for a Darkners' heart to shift to an Evil alignment.
Size. Darkners typically vary in height and weight, ranging from a measly 2 feet, up to an astounding 7.5 feet in height. For simplicity's sake, you are Medium unless your subrace states otherwise.
Speed. Your base walking speed is 30 feet.
Darkvision. You can see in dim light up to 60ft as if it were bright light, and in darkness as if it were dim light. You cannot discern colors in darkness, only shades of gray.
Shadowstuff. Due to your rather unusual composition, you have resistance to Necrotic damage and vulnerability to Radiant damage.
Energized Snacking. Once per long rest, you expend a number of hit dice equal to your Charisma modifier to create an equal count of marshmallow-tasting candies. These candies restore a number of hit points equal to half your hit die, and fizzle away into nothing when you next take a long rest.
Languages. You can speak, read, and write Common and Primordial.

When creating a Darkner, you can use the following table of traits, ideals, bonds, and flaws to help flesh out your character. Use these tables in addition to or in place of your background's characteristics.
