Crafting Magic Items (Variant)[edit]

(This variant rule expands upon the rules outlined on pages 128-129 of the Dungeon Master's Guide and Xanathar's Guide to Everything.)

Crafting magic items is a lengthy process. It is also dangerous. Not only do you have to adventure to obtain the required exotic ingredients to create your item, but you also put your life at risk in order to make it.

At the beginning of each workweek, make a skill check, as appropriate for the item you are trying to create. On a success, the process proceeds as intended. On a failure, something goes wrong and it blows up in your face: Literally. All components used in the stage of crafting that you failed on are consumed and you take an amount of damage equal to twice the level of the spell (or equal to your level, if you are not crafting an item that requires a spell). If you rolled a 1 on the die, consult the Magic Item Critical Failure table below.

Magic Item Critical Failure[edit]

d6 Roll Effect
1 You take double damage from the failure.
2-5 You take additional damage as though you were crafting an item of the other type.
6 You take additional damage from the failure as though you were crafting an item of the other type and double all damage.
